Casting the net – The hypocritical correctionists

Welcome to Casting the net, Liberal Conspiracy’s daily web review. As always, please feel free to share your own recommendations in the comments.

Ruth Fowler – Pffffft!!! Liberals are hypocritical correctionists. I loved this article more than anything I have read this year.
Politalks – Gavin Whenman and Lee Griffin’s witty animations are back, this time they take on those randy politicians (NSFW).
NYT Books – Michiko Kakutani delivers a withering review of Martin Amis’ latest book on the GWOT.
Cerebral Black Hole – Wikileaks is in the news again. This time the site is being hounded by lawyers representing the Church of Scientology.
Obsolete – Brown’s administration has proven to be even more rightwing than could have been feared.
Crooked Timber – Sesame Street and Politics. This is why I write these reviews. Glorious.
The enemies of reason – More tabloid deconstruction from Anton Vowl.

Wow, I take some down time for a month and the whole site changes. Looks much slicker now, cheers for the link :)

Re. the Cif article, Ruth Fowler should get off her very own high-horse. I certainly don’t recognise those preaching ‘lefties’ she describes. But I don’t move in the same middle-class circles. I supsect those friends of hers are for dramatic effect only . . . but then she does have a book to sell, doesn’t she.

3. Lee Griffin

I dunno, I have witnessed plenty of the preaching lefties so can related very easily with what she writes about. The issue of course is that people commenting there have once again confused liberal with left on some level. She considers herself a liberal lefty from what I can tell, but for some lefties being liberal isn’t a good thing. That’s the issue at the heart of the posting for me, that (and as I say I’ve experienced it first hand) the extreme left will operate in just as conservative manner as extreme righties. They may claim they’re liberal because they’re “helping” things, but their actions are anything but, and they do a good job of alienating those that aren’t prepared to go to their extremes.

I don’t think she knows the difference between liberal and left herself.

I accept what you say Lee in that the extreme left are as bad as the extreme right but I really don’t think there is any “issue” at the heart of her post. I can’t work out what she is trying to justify abour her own leftism or who she is trying to justify it to. I think, simply, that it’s a grossly exaggerated piece with made-up characters for effect.

I have to say I was quite annoyed by Ruth’s post too. Just using CIF vitriolic comments is a misnomer since most of the abusers are right-wing Republican types. And you can see them agree with Ruth in the comments underneath (which is ironic).

The left does have sacred cows, but then so does the right. Its never acceptable to hang around right-winghers :)

Oh boo! They’ve closed Ruth’s thread now! Must have all been the wank jokes.

This thread isn’t closed. Carry on… I thought it was class.

Sunny,

Am I now designated a right-winger?

;)

I have to say, i can’t imagine a CV that is more right-on than Ruth Fowler’s:

http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/ruth_fowler/profile.html

Right down to the stripping in Manhattan, it reads like a leftie liberal character from a just out of university first novel….

Anyway, she can write and I’m sure her book is going to be a major success and she’ll achieve super-stardom and a column in GQ. I just hope that she finds an Editor fast (she doesn’t half go on…).

Give her a spot on Liberal Conspiracy!

God, no, don’t give her a spot on LC! She couldn’t construct an argument if her life depended on it, the linked article being a case in point!

I vote to get Ruth Fowler on LC.

Who’s with me????

Awwww, c’mon!

12. Aaron Heath

I’m so buying her book.

Sex, politics, post-university ‘finding yourself’, being right-on while attacking being right-on, her book is going to sell by the cart-load! Get used to Ms Fowler, she’s going to be around for a while.

I seriously have wondered whether she wasn’t an imaginary composite person dreamed up by the CiF ed team to take the piss out of CiF commenters. She hits so many pressure points it’s unreal. If I were on the CiF team, that’s what I’d do to get my own back on the nasty meany readers.

Hm, were you serious, Aaron/e8? Your suggestion interests me strangely. On the one hand, Jennie’s quite right about her powers of argument, plus I think she’s probably a complete twat and it seems unfair on our much more intelligent and self-aware readers to give her space to lord it over them. But on the other, she’s going to be a very good writer once she’s (a) learned to blue pencil and (b) learned some interesting stuff to write about (how can someone exactly the same age as me be so facile?? I thought I was daft as a brush!) Also e8voice is quite right about her career trajectory and sooner or later a bunch of slavering right-on Tories will pick her up if we don’t. Then we’ll get some “How I saw the light” article and at that point I might just have to shoot her. So we’d really be doing her a favour, saving her from death at my crazed hands. Hm.

To be honest, I’m not really bothered whose crazed hands she ends up in. I think she’s probably a bit of a Julie Burchill in the making. Put her in any comment team and she’ll soon be creating chaos. Marina Hyde v Ruth Fowler anyone?

I look forward to seeing where all this leads with interest but I’m sure I’ll very quickly bore of her. We’ll have some great fun in the meantime though.

Aaron – c’mon! on the one hand she’s talking about ho you can;t be a liberal without going abroad and doing somerthing exotic… and then look at her CV! HAs travelled around Nepal and done some course on Bollywood (is that meant to be serious?)!! She’s ms cliche herself!

And yes, you’re our honourary neo-con from now on ;)

I suggest, nay demand, we invade Iran.
