DAILY BLOG REVIEW / by Jennie Rigg

Rhythmaning reports on a new twist on JS Mill’s maxim that while not all conservatives are stupid, most stupid people are conservative.

Peter Black and Chicky Yog both report on the fact that Gordon Brown himself has admitted that government databases can never be secure. I think it’s a bit optimistic to hope that this is the final nail in the coffin of ID cards, though…

Brad Hicks has a nice long entry about electoral fraud in the US.

The Award-Winning Alix Mortimer is being a voice of reason in an inter-LibDem spat, bless her.

Mark Pack on LDV reports that the Tories are having spats too.

I have a rant about the recurring Winterval Myth (some good links in the comments too) in response to this entry.

And this week’s BritBlog Round-up has been done by the very lovely Jonathan Calder, so if you need (lots) more links, head on over there.

Great roundup.

I’d add, though not technically a blog post, Charlie Brooker’s column from today’s Guardian ::

And that’s just my basic, low-level gittery. If something as sublime and revolutionary as Python came along today, the Mail would try to kill it stone dead, and it’d rope in thousands of angry old idiots to help, all of them bravely marching to the Ofcom website to register their disgust. What a rush. Feel that pipsqueak throb of empowerment coursing through your starched and joyless veins! You’ve crushed some fun, and it feels good to be alive!

Perhaps it’s time to put a “Complain to Ofcom” button right there on the remote control: if enough viewers press it, the show gets yanked immediately, like a bad variety act being pulled off stage by a shepherd’s crook.

Yeah, I liked Charlie’s column today too, but was torn between inserting it into news or blog posts…

>>while not all conservatives are stupid, most stupid people are conservative.

As a liberal, I try to avoid generalising about the stupidity/evilness of people who hold differing views.

But this quote is true.

(Lib Dem/Green voter, IQ 160).

Also, on the Heathrow runway:

“It is also understood that a number of cabinet ministers believe agreeing to a third runway would damage the government’s green credentials and cost marginal seats in the south-east.”

Someone thinks this government has green credentials?

As a Liberal, I am happy to quote dear old Mill; he is expressly not generalising about the stupidity of Conservatives; he’s generalising about the conservativeness of stupid people.

Someone thinks this government has green credentials?

This Govt likes to think it has.

I do like the way you’ve used Millian liberal principles to try to reject a quote from the man himself, even though that quote falls very much within his principles.

I don’t reject it, the sarcasm probably didn’t come through properly, sorry.

What I meant was, I take it further than he does – I’d *usually* try not to generalise, except that this quote is 100% true and I’m just fine with it :) In fact, I’d take it further than ‘many stupid people being conservative’ and quite happily say that (in my experience), many conservatives are also stupid.

Which, as I say, isn’t a very liberal thing to do. But in this case, I’m willing to take that hit.
