Democratising the Christmas Number One

There is a meme extant on the interwebz at the moment to prevent the X-Factor winner getting to Christmas number one, on the grounds that many music fans are sick of Simon Cowell being musical dictator of this country. A lot of people are buying the Jeff Buckley version of Halleluiah as thier protest. What you may not realise is that this is doing EXACTLY what the Cowell-meister WANTS you to do – for he owns the rights to the Jeff Buckley version too. For my part, I am in on a different Liberal Conspiracy.

If you want to join with me in the anti-Cowell conspiracy, now is the time to join in the world’s biggest RickRoll. Go forth and buy Rick Astley before the end of today. It’ll cost you less than a quid, and it’ll help a British icon enjoy his retirement. Go on, you know it makes sense. Links to various chart-eligible online stores are below the more tag…

Silly girl. Just, y’know, don’t play it while I’m in the room.

You could put it on your USB stick for work though. You can’t hear a thing behind the bar anyway.

Oh, not 100% sure it’s Cowell who directly owns the rights, it’s definitely a company he’s involved in though. Can’t source the post that told me about it :-(

I’m not going to PLAY it! Heavens, no!

Let me know if you find the link and I’ll edit it in.

Here y’go:

Thanks babe.

Get a room you two.

I’m in it. She’s at work, unfortunately…

Buy Peter Kay’s spoof character (Geraldine McQueen’s ) single.

After all, the character is a piss take at the whole Simon Cowell circus. and the proceeds are for charity.

sally: I don’t really feel like enriching one comedian over another.

The fact Sally has endorsed Peter Kay has put me off supporting it, I think I’m on the Rick Roll bandwagon.

Very good, But Kays single is for charity.

Outstanding, Jennie.

I always hated the Indi snobbery, anyway!

I’d support even SImon Cowell over Peter fucking Kay. World’s unfunniest man…

Oh, and Mat’s source link is wrong; it’s SonyBMG, not Cowell, that owns the rights to all three records. His label, Syco, is part of SonyBMG, but Syco only owns the Alex Burke version.

So you’d be enriching Leonard Cohen and some Japanese and German businessmen by buying Buckley, not Mr Nasty. And, for extra irony point, SonyBMG also owns the rights to Never Gonna Give You Up…

13. twoseventwo

Are we sure that Cowell really has the rights to the Buckley version? That article suggests he even owns the rights to Cohen’s own version as well, and doesn’t back either claim up – I’m suppose prepared to believe it, but not without a bit more proof.

14. twoseventwo

“I suppose I’m prepared to believe it”. Really must learn to proofread…

272, he owns the publishing rights to the song. Regardless of who records it or plays it, he gets money.

Same way that Wacko used to own the rights to all the Beatles records, etc.

no, he doesn’t own any rights to it at all; the linked article is nonsense.
