Event: Fighting Poverty & Inequality in an Age of Affluence
Saturday, 21 February. 100 years on from the Minority Report, Lord Roy Hattersley will lead a Fabian Society and Webb Memorial Trust conference to celebrate the life and work of early Fabian pioneer Beatrice Webb. The event aims to contribute to a contemporary debate on the strategy for fighting poverty and inequality in today’s Britain.
Fighting Poverty & Inequality in an Age of Affluence – Centenary Conference
Saturday, 21 February 2009, London School of Economics
Webb’s 1909 Minority Report to the Poor Law Commission first set out the vision, arguments and values of social justice that were to become the foundations of the modern welfare state and argued that society has a collective responsibility to prevent poverty, not merely alleviate it.
Join Professor Peter Townsend (London School of Economics); Dr. Dianne Hayter (Labour NEC & Webb Memorial Trust); Rushanara Ali (Young Foundation); Karen Buck MP; Siân Berry (Green Party); Barry Knight (Centris); Hetan Shah (DEA); Neil Jameson (London Citizens); Professor Pat Thane (University of London) and many more as we take the equalities debate forward at the Fabian Webb Centenary Conference.
Tickets are available for £5 for members and at a special non-member rate for £9.95 plus a 6 month complimentary membership.
