Stop storage of your web data!

by Jim Killock

You may have read that email and internet phone information now has to be stored by your internet provider. The new law – promoted and pushed in the EU by the UK government – is a first step before they try to change how they can ‘intercept’ your communications.

You can help build the campaign to stop this, firstly by inviting all your friends to our Facebook campaigning group. Secondly, sign the No 10 petition if you haven’t done so already. We need to stop this!

You’re going to fight the online storage of data by asking us all to sign up to Facebook? A social networking site which recently tried to claim the rights to anything posted on it, in perpetuity?

From the BBC Site Mr Killock said the directive was passed only by “stretching the law”.

The EU passed it by “saying it was a commercial matter and not a police matter”, he explained.

“Because of that they got it through on a simple vote, rather than needing unanimity, which is required for policing matters,” he said.

He added: “It was introduced in the wake of the London bombings when there was a sense of shock in Europe. It was used to push people in a particular direction.”

Oh yes, the old shock doctrine. Never fails.

I’m a little downcast if Facebook and the No. 10 petitition site are the best we can do here. The ORG link is informative but I’m not seeing any infomation on what real action can be taken – even something basic like if there’s a particular person to write to would be helpful.

The RIP Act 2000 already compels ISPs in the UK to record traffic.

Hi there,

Yes, a group and a petition are hardly enough to deal with the massive tasks ahead, and this message was simply an update we put out today to supporters. So my apologies if it’s only a first step to help us keep in touch: we, No2ID and others will be piling on the pressure as IMP moves onto the public agenda, and asking for many more concrete actions in the weeks to come.
