New editors for New Statesman

New Statesman magazine has appointed Emily Mann is its new deputy editor. It has also appointed Mehdi Hasan as its new senior editor (politics).

Emily is a former chief sub-editor of the New Statesman and, most recently, has been on the staff of the Guardian, working on the Guardian Review. She succeeds Sue Matthias, who has joined the Guardian as acting editor of its Saturday magazine, Weekend. Emily will join in June.

Emily Mann said: “It is a privilege to return to the New Statesman as deputy editor at this time. The magazine has a long and prestigious history as an essential progressive voice in British politics and culture, and I look forward to working with the rest of the NS team to make that voice even stronger, and more widely heard, in the future.”

NS Editor Jason Cowley said: “I have worked with Emily before and she has the skills and expertise that we need as we seek to develop the magazine and our web operation. She is a brilliant close editor of text and organiser. She is very popular among the staff, and will be a huge asset.”

In addition, Mehdi Hasan has been appointed to the new position of senior editor (politics). He joined Channel 4 in 2007 as a commissioning editor in the news and current affairs department. His commissions include ‘It Shouldn’t Happen to a Muslim’, ‘How the Banks Never Lose’ and ‘Don’t Bank on the Bailout’ – all part of the department’s award-winning ‘Dispatches’ strand.

Previously, he was a deputy executive producer at Sky News, and between 2003 and 2005 was a producer on ITV1’s ‘Jonathan Dimbleby’. He will join in June.

Mehdi Hasan said: “’I am delighted to be joining the New Statesman and I look forward to the challenge of working with Jason Cowley to take the magazine into a new era and continuing to break new ground as the voice of the left.”

Jason Cowley said “Mehdi is an outstanding talent, with a wide range of interests, and he will be working closely with our political correspondent James Macintyre to strengthen our reporting on Westminster and beyond. He will be writing a column for the magazine and a blog for our website.”

After the publication of, “the BNP’s Breakthrough”, by Goodwin and Ford, on 18 Apr, why am I not surprised that there have been changes in the editorial staff?

Atropos – grief! I’ve just had a look at it and I see what you mean. Every BNP voter has got at least one approving comment on the end of it.
