Sarah Palin resigns! (video)

Part 1 (part 2 below)

Weirdest political resignation speech ever? We know that Sarah Palin is intensely ambitious but I can’t see how resigning as governor half-way through the term is a good political move for a future presidency bid. More likely, it feels like Palin knows something in her closet will kill off her leadership bid and rather than put her family through more (evilll librul) media speculation she resigned. The amusing implication from what is a long, rambling, dis-jointed speech, is that her resignation will help the people of Alaska save millions of dollars. This is a sad day for the Democrat re-election cause.

Favourite bits from Palin’s speech:

Let me go back to a comfortable analogy for me — sports… basketball. I use it because you’re naïve if you don’t see the national full-court press picking away right now: A good point guard drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her eye on the basket… and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can win. And I’m doing that, keeping our eye on the ball that represents sound priorities: smaller government, energy independence, national security, freedom. And I know when it’s time to pass the ball — for victory.

Only dead fish ‘go with the flow’

Some Alaskans don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor.

Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months I’ve been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations – such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters’ questions.

Full transcript of her speech here.

“the same old politics as usual”

It sounds from what she is saying is that she herself was an obstacle to change.

Something like an affair with a staffer, or something like Gov Sanford – it’s in the closet somewhere.

What a terrible speech! Christ she can’t say a word without sounding like she is lying. I pity America, if they elect politicians like this. She sounds so nervous.

“The world needs more Triggs” Christ, she is weird. Yay, let’s spend all the money on the troops, rather than at home on healthcare, energy and schools!

In advance, fuck any of the Tory commenters who will no doubt praise her as being a real hero of the people, blah blah blah. There is something so pathetic about you if you even tried to defend that.

What the hell was that????

Did anyone else notice the bit where she went “the *real* climate change – in politics”?

I have got no idea what is in her head – if anything.

3. Denim Justice

Is she still a climate change denier??

4. Denim Justice

She so blatantly had an affair… well done to whoever it was!

heh denim!
No I don’t think she is politically silly enough to have an affair but it has to be momentousness enough to justify quitting half way through a term.

6. andy gilmour

So…”Nailin’ Palin” was a documentary??

🙂

But hey, at least she now knows Kosovo exists (sorry, I’m just recycling jokes from my Tweets earlier)

Wtf? Is her PAC on crack or something?

9. Tim Ireland

The rumours of an affair are UNTRUE. I’m saving myself for Nadine Dorries.

10. Denim Justice

Sunny, you don’t think she is politically silly enough?? Remember “Joe Six Pack”? ‘Nuff said. She is the personification of all the idiocy and silliness that was on display during those sad, sad tea parties.

I’d put some money on it being an affair! If a guy like John Edwards could do it, why not Palin? Her husband doesn’t look like he could satisfy a big, crazy woman like that anyway!

11. Denim Justice

@9 Good luck Tim!

First Jacko, now Palin?? This is a bad, bad world!

12. redpesto

Assuming any dirt doesn’t come out soon, my guess would be that she wants to be some kind of free-floating ‘grassroots’ Republican campaigner, and needs to be able to run against the ‘elites’ (i.e. anybody holding actual political office) in order for her ‘schtick’ to work by 2012. Remember, she still has to get the Republican nomination before she gets a shot (sic) at the presidency. I suspect there are a lot of Republican high-ups who would rather have sex with Joe Biden than see that happen, no matter how much the ‘base’ loves Palin.

13. Adam Bienkov

What the…?

Unfortunately, I think all the skeleton-in-the-closet stuff is wishful thinking. If she was seriously entertaining a presidential run, she was going to have to do this at some point; she couldn’t run for governor again. It’s just a little earlier than expected, that’s all. She likes to be audacious and surprise people, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. I still think the liberal left underestimates her, although the potential threat of her candidacy was undermined by selecting her as VP candidate too early and the trainwreck of the last Republican campaign.

15. Will Rhodes

@ Tim, 14 –

You really think that this air head has a real chance of 1, running for president 2, winning the race?

She is simply too dumb to be even in the race.

16. Will Rhodes

@ Tim, 9 – you are one brave bastard to even say that in public lol.

17. Conservative Cabbie

Sunny

The lack of commitment to an elected office is concerning isn’t it. A bit like being elected to the senate from Illinois perhaps. Remind me how long Barack Obama served in that office? How effective as a Senator was he for the year and a half he was running for President?

He is after all the man who in 2006 promised to serve out his full six year term and stated categorically to Tim Russert:

MR. RUSSERT: So you will not run for president or vice president in 2008?

SEN. OBAMA: I will not.

Palin could certainly have handled this better but quitting the job for a Presidential run (if that’s what she is doing) is no different to Obama’s dedication to his Senate job.

18. Adam Bienkov

“It looks like a duck and quacks like a duck. Either Palin is resigning ahead of some titanic scandal (which should emerge in short order if it exists) or her resignation was triggered by an even more extreme mental instability than we’d previously suspected.”

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/07/surreality_only_beginning.php

My money’s on the scandal

Um, did this lady actually have a point to make in all of that because that was most incoherent speech about nothing imparticular I think I have ever heard. How can you talk for 18 mins, albeit at the speed of light and in a single tone, and not actually say anything?

20. Will Rhodes

It’s a miracle she remembers to breath in. And out, and in.

Some of the comments seem to be bordering on sexist, so let’s cut that out folks.

Sarah Palin has nasty politics and sometimes she does the stupidest things and that speech above really is lame. It’s not setting any campaign on fire.

That said – she’s definitely not some airhead. Though I do remember one hilarious column by a certain Nick Cohen that said lefties should be careful about demonsing her etc etc. I wonder if those words made his latest book.

Palin does a good job of pressing Republican base buttons and for that I admire her. She has the folksy persona down to a T. There is an element of Reaganism here, apart from the fact he did a way better job of reaching out to conservative Democrats and didn’t live in conspiracy theory land where the evil media was on a crusade against him.

“Some of the comments seem to be bordering on sexist, so let’s cut that out folks.”

Agreed! Out with the misogynist tinged “airhead”, in with the gender neutral “moron”!

23. TheLady

Read a rumour couple hours ago that there’s a criminal investigation against her pending back in Alaska. Maybe one of those 15 ethics complaints had stuck?

24. Will Rhodes

Sunny – you added the video, and by your own words:

Weirdest political resignation speech ever? More likely, it feels like Palin knows something in her closet will kill off her leadership bid and rather than put her family through more (evilll librul) media speculation

So, calling her an airhead is misogynist, but saying that she has made one, if not the, worse political speech ever isn’t?

I go along with James – let’s be gender neutral – she (as a politician and not a female/woman/whatever) is a moron. I retract my airhead comment.

More information on “grassroots” supporters gathering across the nation to support Sarah Palin for President in 2012 can be found online at http://www.palin4pres2012.com

Note, the website is in danger of crashing due to the flood of readers and supporters signing up to show their interest in a Palin Candidacy. The GOP establishment had better watch out, Sarah Palin and Ron Paul combined with the power of the internet will remove the stranglehold of GOP special interests and the elites who have brought the party to its knees in defeat in the 2008 elections.

I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone, just saying let’s keep this straight and narrow.

The Lady, there seems to be more here about that potential scandal: http://thinkprogress.org/2009/07/03/palin-hockey-arena-scandal/

It’s definitely a weird and rubbish speech. But that still doesn’t detract from Palin’s capabilities in projecting herself as a down-to-earth folksy defender of the people. She lives in fantasyland when it comes to ‘taxpayer value’ but she says the right things that the base like.

27. Shatterface

You guys are so gullible. That’s clearly Tina Fey.

And calling her an ‘airhead’ is ‘misogynistic’ but suggesting she’s quitting for the sake of her family isn’t?

28. Guy Aitchison

Wow! Were all her speeches this bad and I’d just forgotten how stupid she is or is this one especially shit?

Not just the content but the delivery is incredibly bizarre. It sounds like someone jumbled up all the sentences in her speech, erased some of them and then put a gun to her head and asked her to read it as quickly as possible.

Anyway, this via HuffPo…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/03/sarah-palin-out-of-politi_n_225619.html

“Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.”

Please let this be the reason!

She cost McCain the election, her folkyness, accent and winking do not ring true, her intellect is below par (our vivid memory of the last one who delegates and follows because of their lack of intellect), but lets face it with the right type of marketing (vote folky, vote god) it can be sold to US, history tends to repeat itself. God help us!

30. veggiedude

This sums it all up: LOL

31. Denim Justice

Their base must be really stupid. The speech was just a collection of dog bones and dog whistles for anyone paranoid about ‘big government’, taxes, gun control, states rights, public spending, not enough support for “the troops”, all linked together by ums and ahs. Next time she should not try making a speech and should just reel off these dog bones and dog whistles one by one.

There is a ton of Palin stuff over at the venerable Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/sarah-palin

This profile in Vanity Fair is less than flattering.

More than once in my travels in Alaska, people brought up, without prompting, the question of Palin’s extravagant self-regard. Several told me, independently of one another, that they had consulted the definition of “narcissistic personality disorder” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—“a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy”—and thought it fit her perfectly. When Trig was born, Palin wrote an e-mail letter to friends and relatives, describing the belated news of her pregnancy and detailing Trig’s condition; she wrote the e-mail not in her own name but in God’s, and signed it “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.”

On reading that article, I think it’s highly unlikely she would get the GOP 2012 nomination – they’ve been there already – and it was not good by all accounts.

“On reading that article, I think it’s highly unlikely she would get the GOP 2012 nomination – they’ve been there already – and it was not good by all accounts.”

An idiot president controlled by a shadowy savant puppet-master/mandarin who lingers around in the background accumulating the true power? What could possibly go wrong…

36. jodsterz

Listen to the speech with this in mind…..how did women get the right to vote? How did African Americans achieve civil rights…..Answer….mobilizing the masses and not quiting until victory is achieved. I think her mission is to mobilize the masses for change as history has taught us, and along the way, she may run for office. That is not her goal. She is driven by love of country, not politics. NOW I FINALLY HAVE HOPE!d

You best be trolling, son.

#15

Do I think she’s in with a chance of winning a Republican primary? Absolutely. The only saving grace will be that Obama is unlikely to be contested, so independent voters will hopefully vote in Republican primaries, diluting the now-very-small-and-therefore-more-conservative-on-average-registered-Republican-numbers.

Of course, anything can happen on a campaign.

Yeah, scandal, most probably the sports arena-for-homes thing. OK, so I only just heard about it: http://www.stinque.com/2009/07/04/talibunny-facing-indictment-for-boosting-lumber-labor-for-home-from-hockey-rink-she-championed-as-mayor/

But even right-wing commentators smell a rat in the timing of the thing. If she wants to commit to a better-connected tilt at the White House, why make a snap decision at the start of a three-day weekend? Why write the speech yourself (if that was written by professionals, they should be shot)? Why do it in July, when you don’t have to commit to re-stand for a good few months? There’s time to achieve much more in office before becoming a lame duck – and it’s the start of summer. It’s not *that* important to be hanging around out East (if that’s the excuse) while the government is relaxing for the summer.

So – scandal. But an affair? Nahhhhh! Not close to being credible. Perhaps they’ll reveal Bristol is Trig’s mother, that’s a possibility*. But this is about money.

(* A much better bet is a new weekly show on Fox. Since the GOP’s leadership is now drawn from the station’s staffers and its regular guests, that’s got to be worth a punt.)

“If she wants to commit to a better-connected tilt at the White House, why make a snap decision at the start of a three-day weekend? Why write the speech yourself (if that was written by professionals, they should be shot)? Why do it in July, when you don’t have to commit to re-stand for a good few months?”

The Daily Show/Colbert Report etc are all on reruns next week. Republicans have previously moved announcements so they won’t be lampooned by comedy shows. May be one factor in favour of the precise timing.

Is it just me, or is Palin an awkward and terrible public speaker?

And why does she presume we don’t know shit, and need a basic history lesson with every speech? It’s like she is stood up in school, telling the class what she read about last night.

I actually feel dumber after listening to her.

And why does she presume we don’t know shit, and need a basic history lesson with every speech? It’s like she is stood up in school, telling the class what she read about last night.

Oh yeah, this really reminds me of Bush. That “did you know” sort of excitement in his voice, mainly because he’d only just learnt about it himself. Palin is Bush with added MILF.

43. Brian Smith

How embarrassing for the USA to have senior politicians like this.
“Ramblin’ Rose” has nothing on this fruitcake.
Talk of fridge magnets, basketball, dead fish, what an intellect this woman has.
It does look as though she has jumped before being pushed.

44. Brian Of Florida

Looks like the Democrat Media Propaganda Machine won again.

For all of those people celebrating the downfall of Good People,

HOW’S THAT HOPE AND CHANGE GOING FOR YOU?

What do you plan to do when they come after you?

45. Smart Guy

U People R Just JAILus!

Sarah Palin is about to BLOW UP!

Yes, that’s right folks! We have just learned through “IS” Insider Sources, that the Prez2B is about to put her camPAIN on STEROIDs!!!! Exclamation Mark. Clap. Applause and drum rolls… puhSLeeez. “IS” has just informed us that the vivacious EX-gov is putting her Prez hopes on HGH! Her Governors Humpty!

Yep! As we type, her “IC” Inner Circle team of “BS” Beaucratic Shakers are convening in D.C. to set the stage for the next Prez race. We went inside Studio B, The Situation Room and did a 360 and spoke with Hannity, O’Reilly, Blitzer, Donner and Prancer and it’s confirmed, her P-TEAM is on the move! P-TEAM Political Tactical Experts At Mucking are feverishly working behind the scenes prepping the shapely political virtuoso for the announcement. Word is the ticket could be:

Palin and LIMPbaugh
Palin and Newt GingRich
Palin and Sanford
Palin and SPITzer
Palin and Hannity
Palin and O’Reilly
Palin and Ensign

Although the P-TEAM is still fiercely debating whose going to be Sarah’s running mate, LIMPbaugh says he’s the best candidate for America. When GingRich asked if his past could affect the ticket, his response was, “NO!” Newt said America has forgiven and forgotten that he called it quits just like Palin. If you are a TRUE Republican, you should be Xcited!!!! Go Republicans! Go GOP Get Others Pumped! We can do this!

46. david brough

Fuck off, 46.

47. Will Rhodes

Being in North America you get a lot of the US CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, CBS etc, etc – and if – depending on what you have seen of Palin – that news coverage is fair, which I think it is, Palin is shown up each time she speaks.

When she was first rolled out she was a kitsch thing, who was she, who is this new Republican that has the conservative base all woosie?

It was proven, once she was allowed to do interviews, that she isn’t anything special. Much akin to Joe the plumber.

The only positive from Palin hitting the national stage was that Mudflats went from a niche blog to read by millions.

48. Andy Gilmour

Dear Brian of Florida (so as not to confuse you with any other Brians there might happen to be in the USA, which I’m reliably informed is quite replete with ‘Brians’ of different ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations), you asked:

“What do you plan to do when they come after you?”

Ummm..exactly who is this “they”?

And why would they be ‘coming after’ me (a single parent living in Dunfermline, Scotland) particularly?

Surely if these “Good People” of whom you speak (as opposed to the naughty, awful, wicked folk who might have broken laws regarding bribery, corruption, abuse of elected position, misappropriation of public funds – that the sort of thing you had in mind?) were really quite so “good”, then they wouldn’t keep dashing off to Argentina to cheat on their spouses, or have to resign because they’d, ummm, most probably broken some of those pesky laws, so there wouldn’t be any ‘downfalls’ for us to point and laugh heartily at (while burning U.S. flags and eating roasted babies, naturally)…would there?

Damn us insignificant, nonentity foreign liberals! We’re so powerful and evil, we forced Sarah Palin to resign…by some strange mechanism that isn’t immediately apparent, yes, but still. Evil!

Happy 4th of July!

49. Denim Justice

Joe Six-pack!

50. asquith

47,

You misspelt Insannity.

51. VoteTheDay

The reasons of Palin resignation are obvious. Vote on the most possible one – http://www.votetheday.com/america/palin-resignation-424/

To quote another major Republican politician/movie star: “She’ll be back.”

So now that Palin is out, who is the leading contender for the Republican nomination in 2012?

54. Conservative Cabbie

Sean @55

Mitt Romney by a country mile. But don’t count Sarah Palin out yet. She is far and away the most popular potential candidate amongst Republicans according to a recent Pew survey (by nearly twenty points) and matches Romney amongst Democrats and independents. She is also more popular across the country as a whole than Romney and even after recent events, her base is still likely to be more solid than Romneys. However, Romney will be strongly solidified with the party machinery now, including the pundits so Palin has to do a Ron Paul, or dare I say it, a Barack Obama.

Other contenders:

Mike Huckabee – a populist with more appeal to non-Republicans but won’t have enopugh conservative support or financial backing
Newt Gingrich – Probably second favourite right now.
Haley Barbour – Is putting feelers out about running but is getting little traction
Tim Pawlenty – A very good outside bet for the nomination

Probably the best dark horse if you’re going to put your money on someone though is Mitch Daniels, Governor of Indiana. Has said he won’t run but is very popular in Indiana with a 69% approval rating and despite the Obama whirlwind last election (including winning Indiana) he won his gubernatorial election by a 16 point margin. He has the conservative credentials to ensure their support but is enough of a reformer to appeal to independents. If he chooses to run, he may give Romney his hardest battle (depending on what happens with Palin).

Of course with the way things are going with GOP hopefuls right now, all that could change in a heartbeat.

Palin will NEVER be President, and you are making all that up anyway. She is going to jail and this course was set a long time ago. Imagine if she were in the whitehouse now !

56. Denim Justice

@57 The White House just got Palinised:

http://www.palinaspresident.us

57. Kathryn

@ Denim

I’m an American, but I most certainly did not elect THAT. I feel sorry for us, too.

When she accepted the VP nomination, she knew she needed to bring her professional game up to another level, she never did. She knew that her family would get attacked as did Hilary and Chelsea before her (by even her twin maverick brother McCain in 1998), let face it she knew her family affairs would come out. But now she plays the victim card again, a card she played after those comical first extended interviews that we all enjoyed and SNL immortalized. But for the icing on the cake, she quits, because she does not want to be a lame duck governor, because the lawsuits keep coming, because it was the media’s fault, because seeing Russia from her house finally got to her, because its not fair that Alaskan’s paid her salary while she was running for the VP position, take your pick. So what does she tells us? Dear Mr. President, when things get tough, quit. Dear military men and women, if you are not having fun, quit. Dear son or daughter, if things are not going your way, quit. Sure, I agree when she first was introduced and gave a descent speech, sure the polls went up, but after the extended interviews, they went where they ended, down. She showed her true character, I real hope the book deal, Radio/ TV shows and the lecture circuits make up for what her party has lost by her actions. She may go down in history as the quitter that twittered.

Let me ask who would you chose to get a surgery from a person who worked hard and received an Ivy League education, or one who does not care about education (especially science) and drifts and somehow manages to get a degree. She showed her true character, by quitting (cut and run) just like her college years. She couldn’t even give a decent exit speech (her railings against the media was sweet until she did an about face and ask them to go on a fishing trip with her to clarify her “Rambling Rose” comments). She was right for Alaska (with a population of less than 700,000), and her education matches it (journalism degree from the University of Idaho in 1987). But if you think anyone who wants to get our country back on track after the fiasco of the last administration with our economy and the fabrication of two wars then you along with the empty party are completely lost (are you surprise about the election results?). For the previous eight years we put up with a dullard president, but no more, you may try in 2012 but our eyes are open. I have heard that Republicans lost because God was against them, I can only say look at the candidates the Republicans put forward on their national ticket and don’t make the same mistake again. Mavericks, please, more like flash over substance (she quit and he fumbled) and the majority of voters saw it. We both know that she is cashing out, book deal, a show (Radio/TV), speaking engagements, she will keep stringing her followers along as long as she keeps the possibility open for running in 2012.

Can anyone real tell me that you were impressed by her exit speech? You can’t real believe that she is the only person that can win in 2012. You know, if she can’t take a joke, don’t get in the game, its politics, they all get kicked around. Let me paint you a picture, in my opinion, for the last eight years where the mantra was no regulation and no oversight and spread to all federal agencies and the justice department was filled by unqualified religious types and the dullard (ex-drunk) religious president started two wars of choice with extreme tax dollar spending, is anyone surprised with our current economic situation because of those choices. Sure “W” sucker the religious right to vote for him and that’s why he placed unqualified people in positions of responsibility and they failed (almost a “plan to fail”), do you forget Katrina, where the Director of FEMA Michael D. Brown, was relieved of his duties because of incompetence? Or can you forget disgraced White House correspondent James Guckert, AKA Jeff Gannon, the male escort, why was a male escort getting into the Whitehouse, hmmm? I know it was Barney Frank’s fault, he controls the county and republicans had their hands tied (even though 7 of the last 8 years they had the majority and the presidency to do something (fact or fiction?), but not the will to act). Oh, by the way I read that God blog, very funny, it reminds me of those TV evangelists who claim the talk to God and want so and so foreign country leader to be killed or such and such a us state to be punished by God for a court ruling that intelligent design is just another word for religion. We had enough of religious dullards in our government. If you believe that the USA has strayed from God then go out to your communities and preach to your neighbors, the sick, the shut ins, the poor and invite them to take part in your church, build a community. But I know that’s hard work we want a government official to do that for us, well they tried that and look where it left us, in the gutter, but our country does not quit and we will rise again. Do you remember how Ronald Reagan got us out of a recession? By spending and we will do the same. But she is just another “W” in heels and she is stringing the religious right along, she will sell you her books, her radio/TV shows and speaking engagements. Lastly, I do not want you to believe what I believe, so please keep writing, feel free, I am starting to enjoy this.
