I like the LC look, one of the best around, but change the typeface of the ‘latest comments’ bit would you? It hurts

i like it but as Sy said, the font on the latest comments is a bit blocky.

The font size on the latest comments column could be increased, and indeed on the entries and comments in general. What is this I’m typing in, 6-point?

As for layout, the “We’re on Twitter” and Hot Topics overwrites the ends of half of the recent article titles.

Are the columns fixed width or proportional? There are wide grey bars down the sides of my screen, but it’s a laptop with a fairly wide screen relative to the resolution.

On FF 3.5.1, the “We’re on Twitter” and “Hot Topics” blocks overlay the “Recent articles across Liberal Conspiracy ” list (on an actual blog post).

I’m not liking the 4-column layout on the front page either – the column containing the “Latest Blog” is unbalanced with respect to the others (it’s mostly empty), and I’m not convinced about having nearly half of the page width given over to all that crap on the right… That might just be a matter of taste though. 😉

Then there’s the appearance of a horizontal scrollbar at 1028×768 or less – that’s likely to annoy anyone with poor vision. Lots of people have trouble reading a monitor at these high resolutions, especially if they’ve got old sub-17″ CRTs… You’re only about 1 pixel away from not having a scrollbar at 1028×768 anyway, making the scrollbar both ugly and pointless.

Oh, and it might be good to add at least a couple of px of horizontal padding to images on the blog posts – for example, on “The Chloe-ification of the Conservative party”, the first line of text runs right up to the border of the image.

Phew! mostly positive so far.

I’ll definitely get the over-laying of content sorted on article pages. I knew that last night, but didn’t get time to sort it.

Same goes for the typeface at ‘latest comments’. I’m not actually sure what’s going on there but I’ll look into it.

Also will look at sizes in the comment boxes. It might be that my own computer has slightly bigger comment sizes which is why I don’t see that as an issue.

The unbalanced bit will also be dealt with don’t worry. There’s a lot more content and sections to be added don’t worry! It will also balance out in the end…

Ow. The font for latest comments is painful…(and bigger font for typing in the comment box too, please). Q. a bit of dead space on both sides (using Ffox 3.1.5) so scope for bigger fonts, without clutter.

The Archive link doesn’t seem to work.

I’m not too bothered about font sizes as I usually post in my phone and I adjust the zoom accordingly.

It’d be really great if we had a preview function though, like Harry’s Place. (Yep, people there really look again at what they’ve just written and STILL think it’s a good idea to click the Submit button!)

The ability to edit comments for a limited time (say, 10 minutes) after publishing would be fantastic if possible. Would avoid all those unnecessary comments – regarding which I’m one of the worst offenders – saying things like “whoops, that was aimed at #15”.

I like it, an incremental rather than revolutionary update but it’s a good refresh. Like the CiF thing you got going on.

It is possible but requires the addition of the WP Ajax Edit Comments plug-in.

Sunny is rather wary of adding too many plug-ins to LC but this one should be included as, in addition to allowing users to edit comments for a limited period after posting (IIRC the default is 15 mins but it can be altered), it would also enable those of us with admin access to make comment edits and flag up spam without the need to go into the back-end all the time.

yeah, the edit comments thing might be better that a preview function. Will look at that tonight too.

Oh yes, will look at archives too. Need to install the plugin for that. I hate installing too many plugins.

As Leon said – it’s an incremental change. I need to iron out bugs, expand the content… and then start adding more sections in anticipation of when the Tories get in 🙂

It looks good, well done (I am pretty easily pleased when it comes to layout though ;-))

Two suggestions:first, it would be good to expand the ‘recent articles’ list a bit (or make the Archives link work…) – I want to check something that was posted on a thread I was on three or four days ago, and as far as I can make out, the only way to find it at the moment would be to Google it.

Second, could you include a box somewhere near the ‘Comments’ box explaining how to use bold, italics and emoticons? I can’t be the only one whose knowledge of HTML is not up to snuff. As it is, I suffer from shocking emoticon envy that, frankly, is affecting the quality of my posts.

OK, now I’m befuddled by the sudden appearance of an emoticon. I am plainly too stupid to be here.

Using Zoom In to increase type size works well on Mac OS X (10.5.x) with Safari 4.x and FireFox 3.x. I can live with the default size for that configuration, but bigger is better for me. The same operation doesn’t work well with IE7 on XP — unpleasant text rendering at any larger size. IE7 on Windows Server 2003 (a minority…), text zoom in doesn’t work at all.

The fourth column is unreadable for many visitors on all browsers that I have tried.

The “Elsewhere” video was almost as funny as piles. Remember that most of us visit in order to conduct ill-informed debate with complete strangers. Most of us have a TV if we want to view something that is even more ridiculous.

Seems a little busy to me; not sure how I like under the elsewhere video there’s a plain white column either.
