Want to hear Tony Blair speak?

Fans of former prime minister Tony Blair should be delighted to hear he’s giving a series of seminars and speeches in London over the coming months.

Organised by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, in association with DFID, Islamic Relief, WorldVision and Oxfam, they will cover the subject theme: ‘New Perspectives on Faith and Development’.

A press release states:

Our goal is to explore the vital role that faith can play in all aspects of international development. The role of faith in the context of development is complex – it is often hugely positive, but it can also be deeply problematic. The speakers will represent a variety of faith and secular perspectives, and each seminar will be an honest and open discussion about the role of faith and the contribution of the faith communities to development.

I’m sure you’ll agree Tony Blair has much to teach others on how faith (and foreign policy?) can bring communities together.

Closing keynote address from The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.

You can request a space by emailing by the 2nd of September 2009 to register your interest, stating which seminars you would like to attend.

The location of the seminars will be in a central London location, but the exact location cannot be revealed until 24 hours before the first event. Top secret stuff.

(Is this the same Tony Blair who led us to war in Iraq as part of his “Christian battle”, and who felt that his actions would ultimately be “judged by God” – not, say, the families of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have died in the conflict to date?)

Since the press release states there’ll be

then if Holy Tony were going to stand up and admit that his irrational belief in his invisible chum convinced him to f*ck-up on a global scale, and that he was “a very naughty boy”…

that’d be worth hearing.

But only for free mind.

What’s the problem? If, as Prime Minister, Blair had told us that he was on a mission from God, I would have been very frightened. But he didn’t, he just lied instead.

Blair is now a private citizen as far as UK governance is concerned. If he wants to talk about faith and how it affects his judgement, that is up to him. The Quartet on the Middle East may challenge his judgement, depending on the content of his speeches, and that is their problem. Given that Middle East conflict is ostensibly founded on religious difference, discussion of faith may be a good thing.

Simply knocking Blair by comparing his Christianity with his mistakes is childish and unnecessarily offensive to others who propound liberal politics on the basis of faith.

Agree completely, though.

Having said that, how many dead corpses does the Pope have on his conscience? Epic fail in “faith and development” is hardly unique to Blair…

No one has as many corpses on their conscience as Henry Kissinger.

And I’ve just read World War Z so corpses do indeed have a dead and alive feel right now.
