Dorries opposes equal lesbian birth rights

It was reported today by the BBC that women in same-sex relationships can now register both their names on the birth certificate of a child conceived as a result of fertility treatment.

But prominent Tories were not happy. Nadine Dorries told the BBC:

If we want to build a stable society, a mother and father and children works as the best model.

We should be striving towards repairing and reinforcing marriage. I think this move sends out the exact opposite message.

The modern face of the progressive and compassionate Tory party no doubt.

According to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, there were 728 lesbians who underwent in vitro fertilisation (IVF) between 1999 and 2006.

The BBC also reports that: “Also, sperm donors will continue to be able to opt in or out of having their name on the birth certificate, but if both mothers wish to have their name on the document, the donor cannot be registered in that way.”

I should think so too.

The traditional family unit died ages ago.

While I maintain my belief that having a mother and father is best, I’m just glad that any child can have the benefit of two loving parents, regardless of who those parents are. All too rare a thing now, it -is- ashame Dorries doesn’t see it that way.

Luckily, when progressive moves like this are put in place, shrill voices like Dorries die out soon enough.

How sad to see such efforts to rob children of a natural childhood with their own granny’s grandads, uncles, aunties and cousins let alone a father, brothers and sisters or a proper family.

But instead the usual sordid pick up at a dancing around the handbag piss up and being dumped as soon as the next birthday or Christmas that might need a £quid pressy!

5. Stirring Up Apathy

He was supported by Labour MP Geraldine Smith, who said: ‘To have a birth certificate with two mothers and no father is just madness.”

No mention of her then. I’m all for skewering backward Tories and their crazy views, Dorries in particular, but shouldn’t an equally deluded Labour minister get the same treatment?

“The traditional family unit died ages ago”.

@ 2 LOL – how can the most common current form of family unit be said to have “died ages ago”

@ 3 There’s nothing “progressive” about manufacturing children in a lab. When the Nazis tried it, it was called eugenics – try googling it.

but shouldn’t an equally deluded Labour minister get the same treatment?

Agreed, but who takes Geraldine Smith seriously? Thankfully such idiocy is dying out on the left.

A mother and father works best? is that an actual fact?

9. Married Two Kids

That would be the divorced Ms Dorries who wants to build a stable society based on the bedrock of marriage.

10. Left Outside

Fucking idiots, the nuclear family has been common for a few generations, easily less than a century and probably no more than 50 years. It’s not all that you know.

Oppose gay marriage, or equal parenting rights if you want. But don’t be so odious as to suggest you’re doing it for the good of the children. Dorries is doing this for her own bigoted ideological convictions.

Evidence? Well you have this:

“Beliefs that lesbian and gay adults are not fit parents likewise have no empirical foundation (Anderssen, Amlie, & Ytteroy, 2002; Brewaeys & van Hall, 1997; Parks, 1998; Patterson, 2000; Patterson & Chan, 1996; Perrin, 2002; Stacey & Biblarz, 2001; Tasker, 1999; Victor & Fish, 1995). Lesbian and heterosexual women have not been found to differ markedly either in their overall mental health or in their approaches to child rearing (Bos et al., 2004; Kweskin & Cook, 1982; Lyons, 1983; Miller, Jacobsen, & Bigner, 1981; Mucklow & Phelan, 1979; Pagelow, 1980; Parks, 1998; Patterson, 2001; Rand, Graham, & Rawlings, 1982; Siegenthaler & Bigner, 2000; Thompson, McCandless, & Strickland, 1971). Similarly, lesbians’ romantic and sexual relationships with other women have not been found to detract from their ability to care for their children (Bos et al., 2004; Chan et al., 1998b; Pagelow, 1980). Lesbian couples who are parenting together have most often been found to divide household and family labor relatively evenly and to report satisfaction with their couple relationships (Bos et al., 2004; Brewaeys et al., 1997; Chan, et al., 1998a; Ciano-Boyce & Shelley-Sireci, 2002; Hand, 1991; Johnson & O’Connor, 2002; Koepke, Hare, & Moran, 1992; Osterweil, 1991; Patterson, 1995a; Sullivan, 1996; Tasker & Golombok, 1998; Vanfraussen, Ponjaert-Kristoffersen, & Brewaeys, 2003). Research on gay fathers likewise suggests that they are likely to divide the work involved in child care relatively evenly and that they are happy with their couple relationships (Johnson & O’Connor, 2002; McPherson, 1993).
The results of some studies suggest that lesbian mothers’ and gay fathers’ parenting skills may be superior to those of matched heterosexual couples. For instance, Flaks, Fischer, Masterpasqua, and Joseph (1995) reported that lesbian couples’ parenting awareness skills were stronger than those of heterosexual couples. This was attributed to greater parenting awareness among lesbian nonbiological mothers than among heterosexual fathers. In one study, Brewaeys and her colleagues (1997) likewise reported more favorable patterns of parent-child interaction among lesbian as compared to heterosexual parents, but in another, they found greater similarities (Vanfraussen, Ponjaert-Kristoffersen, & Brewaeys, 2003). A recent study of 256 lesbian and gay parent families found that, in contrast to patterns characterizing the majority of American parents, very few lesbian and gay parents reported any use of physical punishment (such as spanking) as a disciplinary technique; instead, they were likely to report use of positive techniques such as reasoning (Johnson & O’Connor, 2002). Certainly, research has found no reasons to believe lesbian mothers or gay fathers to be unfit parents (Armesto, 2002; Barret & Robinson, 1990; Bigner & Bozett, 1990; Bigner & Jacobsen, 1989a, 1989b; Bos et al., 2003, 2004; Bozett, 1980, 1989; Patterson, 1997; Patterson & Chan, 1996; Sbordone, 1993; Tasker & Golombok, 1997; Victor & Fish, 1995; Weston, 1991). On the contrary, results of research suggest that lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive home environments for children.”

There’s nothing “progressive” about manufacturing children in a lab. When the Nazis tried it, it was called eugenics – try googling it.

Because of course liberal moves to remove restrictions on who can become parents are exactly the same as totalitarian restrictions on breeding. And a lesbian’s womb with donor sperm is a baby factory from A Brave New World. Stands to reason.

“Agreed, but who takes Geraldine Smith seriously? Thankfully such idiocy is dying out on the left.”

Yes but that would be because the New Labour has ceased to be a working class party and has become a middle class party hell bent on radical social revolution. It has now lost all connection with Labour voters most of whom would certainly agree with Geraldine Smith and with Nadine Dorries along with the vast majority of the population. To have a birth certificate with two mothers on it is a totalitarian falsification and is a sickening attack on fatherhood.

Nadine Dorries is nearly as much of a joke as Hannan but not quite, what a vile character she is but long may she keep spouting her nonsense so that the party she represents can be seen for what they are.

#12

Can you explain how the state doing as individuals ask (the decision on whether to include the sperm donor – provided he has opted in – or the non-biological mother on the birth certificate is effectively up to the biological mother) equates to totalitarianism?

Surely the state not permitting the parents to record the birth certificate details as they wish would be more akin to totalitarianism?

To think, that someone might object that two people who aren’t actually the parents of a child should be denied the opportunity to be registered as the child’s parents!

No wonder you lot are 15% behind in the polls. You inhabit a different mental universe to the rest of us.

@15

At the moment, a heterosexual couple that use a donor egg/donor sperm/donor embryo are permitted to put their own names as the parents and not that of the donor. This regulation simply allows for equality. Most importantly, this ties up legal loopholes and helps stop the problems that occur if heaven forbid something happens to the biological mother and the other mother has no legal right to the children – now this won’t happen, and good thing too.

Also, given that birth certificates are not always a register of a person’s biological parents (in the past, the wrong father has been known to be placed on the birth certificate – enter Maury Povich), I don’t see why anyone would have a problem.
