It’s getting to a point where Glenn Beck isn’t funny any more and I feel uncomfortable laughing at him. I think he’s actually mentally ill and needs help.

Update: Beck again led all shows (including The O’Reilly Factor) in the adults 25-54 demographic on Thursday night.

Though a little scandal might alienate advertisers, it’s pure ratings gold. Last night Glenn Beck had over 3 million viewers at 5pm, second only to O’Reilly for the night. But, Beck had more 25-54 viewers than O’Reilly (888K to 876K). I don’t watch or really even care about the cable news wars, but still…wow. Even though Beck airs before primetime, when there are fewer people watching TV, he had the most 25-54 viewers in the cable news world for the night.

Similarly, Eastenders draws rather more viewers than Newsnight. No doubt the latter would draw more punters if it had a few more fistfights and explosions, although I suspect such a move might interfere with their ability to inform the public.

That said, I can see why some people might regard a news and politics channel that makes money by feeding the public ignorant and insane bullshit as a laudable enterprise.

So Guido thinks the important measure is not the quality of your output, but how many morons you can attract. Anyone surprised?

Little surprise seeing the fat drunk here, defending him with viewing figures as if that wins the argument but Larry has it down, fat drunk has long confused the volume of comments with how popular he is.

What do viewing figures say about Beck…? Very little. Sanity is not statistical, as Winston Smith said.

I suppose Guido works by that philosophy himself- the higher the viewing figures, the more sense you make. It’s a flawed one.

I want to make an “Outrage” app that lets FOX viewers know what they are supposed to be outraged about that day. Then they don’t have to go to all the trouble of watching Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. It can have an outrage meter like the ‘threat level’ at the airport, except it’s just shades of red. From magenta to deep crimson. It can come packaged with the ‘Buzzword ‘ app. Today’s buzzword is ‘indoctrination.’
