What did Nadine Dorries MP spend £9000 on?

The Guardian’s outsourcing of MP’s expenses to readers uncovered this gem:

When Tory MP Nadine Dorries, submitted a £9,000 claim last year, a House of Commons official wrote on the form: “Due to lack of cooperation by member, assumption that costs relate to (blanked out) address, as stated on ACA nomination”.

Another official added: “ok to proceed”. Dorries declined to explain what the note meant.

£9,000 is a significant amount of money. What was it for, any ideas readers?

It’s also significant the official wrote: ‘due to lack of cooperation by member‘, which suggests a degree of unwillingness by Nadine Dorries to be open about her expenses. Or perhaps we have this wrong and she declared it elsewhere?

Nevertheless, anyone know what this is for?

Also, odd that a sum that big wasn’t picked up by libertarian blogs that have so far tended to jump on big number expenses.

Update: Chris Paul has more details on this.

“Also, odd that a sum that big wasn’t picked up by libertarian blogs that have so far tended to jump on big number expenses.”

Guido mentioned it in passing in his “quick round-up” along with her £1000 gas bill.

‘due to lack of cooperation by member‘ is most likely bureaucrat-speak for we sent her a letter and she hasn’t yet replied.

Nothing to get too pompous about.

Compared to Labour expenses outrages such as claiming for mortgages that have already been paid off, or Gordon Brown’s claiming exes for his constituency home when the taxpayer is already paying everything for his London home (plus Chequers), being a bit slow with the paperwork is small beer.

Except this is Nadine Dorries, Paulo. If there was one MP out of all Tories that I’d suspect would be deliberately uncooperative and obtuse, it’d be her.

I’ll put up a blogpost, specifically about this post of yours. Back in a moment.

The Torygraph is sayng Sion Simon bunged £40K of taxpayers’ dosh his sister’s way.

A much more promising scandal.

If you go a little further into the relevant pdf document – page 19, to be precise – you’ll find a rent receipt for £9000 pertaining to a different period. I think that’s why they assumed that’d be rent for it. However, without a receipt, I’m not sure it should have been paid out.

What’s much more telling is that when this stuff first broke, Nadine was featured in the Telegraph apologising for the fact that this second home she claimed £18,000 a year for was actually her first home:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/5330904/MPs-expenses-Tory-MP-Nadine-Dorries-admits-she-only-spends-weekends-and-holidays-in-her-main-home.html
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/5340178/Nadine-Dorries-apologises-over-second-home-MPs-expenses.html

Henceforth the word Dorries means to us the most terrible curse. From now on the word Dorries will trigger your rifle. We shall not speak any more. We shall not get excited. We shall kill. If you have not killed at least one Dorries a day, you have wasted that day. If you think that that instead of you, the man next to you will kill him, you have not understood the threat. If you do not kill the Dorries, he will kill you. If you cannot kill your Dorries with a bullet, kill him with your bayonet. If there is calm on your part of the front, if you are waiting for the fighting, kill a Dorries before combat. If you leave a Dorries alive, the Dorries will hang a Russian and rape a Russian woman. If you kill one Dorries, kill another – there is nothing more amusing for us than a heap of Dorries corpses. Do not count days; do not count miles. Count only the number of Dorriess you have killed. Kill the Dorries – this is your old mother’s prayer. Kill the Dorries – this is what your children beseech you to do. Kill the Dorries – this is the cry of your Russian earth. Do not waver. Do not let up. Kill

Also, that address, blanked out by the Commons, is apparently George Street:

http://parliament.telegraph.co.uk/mpsexpenses/expense-microsite/uncensored-files/Nadine-Dorries/mp-11397

Check the “uncensored files” tab, then 2007/2008 and the unblanked version of p19 of the Commons 2008/2009 file is on page 3. I don’t know if the Telegraph have it confused or the Commons have it confused.

An hour later: Nadine Uncooperative? Never!

Believe me Paulo, this one is much more interesting than Sion Simon’s recently discovered error.

Was it Earrings?

“Guido mentioned it in passing in his “quick round-up””

That is standard procedure where tories are involved.

Following Ian at #11, I reckon it was hours of late-night, heavy-breathing phone calls to Sunny’s mobile…?

In response to Ian at 11, I think it was actually no strings attached sex…

I knew Nadine Dorries when I lived in Liverpool many years ago. This MP ( and godness knows how she managed to become an MP) has told so many porkies through the years that I can assure you she will have “an answer” albeit not the true answer to anything connected to expenses, or any matter past or future !
It has simply astounded me that a number of newspaper’s and journalist’s have not “picked up” on her statements. For goodness sake they only have to compare how her answers change right back to being Born On A Council Estate ( that’s a laugh ) then stupidly she says on her blog at one point —going to a conference in Liverpool she commented to the taxi driver—“I was born not far from Oakfiled Road, in Breck Road !!! come on who is sleeping out there in the land of journalist’s ? Her somewhere “other place” she lives !! obviously she will continue to get away with her porkies. Except perhaps one journalist who seems to have actually put two and two together A Gold Star for him Sunny .
