Daily Mail calls abused woman a ‘stripper’

The Daily Mail is really, really horrible.

But we already knew this.

But as casual misogyny and general nastiness goes, the following headline is something of a paradigm example: “Stripper jailed for lacing lover’s Angel Delight with poison” – screams the Dail Mail.

I don’t trawl the Mail website for entertainment. I know about this because the “stripper” in question is (deep breath) my girlfriend’s housemate’s ex-boyfriend’s sister.

A stripper, was she? Well even the Mail’s own article manages to note that:

The court heard that Mardon carried out the attacks because she was in an abusive relationship and was forced to work as a stripper to bring in extra cash.

From what I’m told, “abusive relationship” is something of an understatement. But for the Mail, it’s just a woman’s place in the home:

She had a day job as a clerical assistant and had been pressured by him to work at night as a stripper.

Mardon would then return to the two-bedroom house in Thornbury, Bristol, owned by Martyn’s father. She lived there with Martyn and his brother and their father.

She would then be required to cook for the men and do the housework.

And despite all that she is referred to merely as a “stripper”.

We did.

LC does seem unable to get beyond it’s fixation with that paper.

Hey Sunny, is it time to suggest a moratorium on hand wringing over the Daily Mail?

My local paper (which is owned by the Mail) managed to handle the story with a bit more compassion and intelligence: http://bit.ly/7Q9NHJ – what a shame that the Mail couldn’t be bothered. I also see that ‘comments are no longer being accepted on this story’ which means, at some stage, a massive barrage of bile was presumably aimed in her direction.

So what’s your point you just confirmed she was a stripper?
It was an unsimpathetic, but not factually incorrect, article in the Daily Mail.
Get over it!

@3 – ‘not factually incorrect’ – yes, that’s how they get away with it too isn’t it.

What the article is getting at is that to the Mail this woman is no more than a stripper – and so not worthy of being treated as a ‘normal’ person. It totally ignores that fact that she is a stripper as a part of the abusive relationship – and that’s before even considering if someone deserves to be treated as lower down the food chain because of being a stripper.

I suppose you think if the relationship was that bad she just should have left, the silly girl her?

She was a stripper, from choice. She tried too poison (and presumably kill) not only her lover but her lover’s family too. She later stabbed him.

All this while he could have just walked away.

So he’s an unpleasant, abusive person; but so is she. She had a choice and her choice was to try to murder people.

David Jones,

What a wonderfuly novel (and convenient!) conception of choice you have going on there.

Ever thought of becoming a philosophy professor? I’m sure the world would be all the better for your incisive metaphysical insights.

Paul, it was a choice. How wasn’t it a choice?

You clearly aren’t of the opinion that women aren’t responsible for their actions, are you? So there were alternatives to attempting to kill he lover and his father, weren’t there?

Incidentally, I orignally intended to write that all this while she could have walked away.

Who says there is anything wrong with being a stripper?

Daily Wail hates woman, I am shocked, shocked at such news.

But then if you have as an editor, a low life, woman hating piece of shit who acccording to private eye loves to use the word cunt in front of fellow workers, what do you expect?

Not morality that is for sure.

11. David Jones

What’s more woman-hating than claiming that women don’t know their own minds and are not able to make their own choices when they decide to attempt to murder someone?

So it is fine for the communist govt of China to kill a mentally ill man for having drugs on him, but it is not ok for a woman to kill an abusive husband.

Don’t you just love Daily Wail morality?

David Jones: She was a stripper, from choice.

Looks like reading comprehension continues to be a problem for you. Even the Daily Mail admits… and was forced to work as a stripper to bring in extra cash.

14. David Jones

Sunny, what the Daily Mail says about being forced is neither here nor there and I’d point out that you don’t usually rely upon the Daily Mail to support your contentions. This is an interesting turn of events.

What forced her to work as a stripper rather than just leave the man whom she hated so much she tried to murder? I don’t buy it.

Apparently now you think that it wasn’t only her mind not working; her legs seem to have given up too.

Apparently now you think that it wasn’t only her mind not working; her legs seem to have given up too.

Well clearly you don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘forced’.

Secondly, I believe that bit because, most likely, it was came from the actual court report or was said during the actual trial.

16. David Jones

Sunny, I do indeed understand what ‘forced’ means. Sorry the facts don’t fit with your agenda. Did you read her note of apology?

…Maybe next time I’ll get away with it.

‘Thanks for allowing me to be a guest. I’m leaving at half three today. Good luck with the boys.

So after attempting murder she declared she was going to leave. So she clearly could have left before and instead of attempting murder, couldn’t she?

Sally @ 10

But then if you have as an editor, a low life, woman hating piece of shit who acccording to private eye loves to use the word cunt in front of fellow workers, what do you expect?

The Daily Mail has more women readers than any other paper and is the only national newspaper with more women readers than men.

What you mistake for misogyny is actually pandering to a largely female audience. Time the sisterhood faced reality on this and stopped demonizing men.

@17

Are you trying to suggest that women cannot participate in misogyny?

Do you also think that black people can’t be racist against black people?

19. David Jones

Jonny-

Women cannot be misogynistic as that would require they have intentions and as Sunny and Paul point out, a woman doing a reprehensible thing can never have done it intentionally.

Sunny, I do indeed understand what ‘forced’ means. Sorry the facts don’t fit with your agenda.

I’m just pointing out the facts. You’re the one doing the backtracking.

a woman doing a reprehensible thing can never have done it intentionally.

You’re right, in this case she’s the reprehensible one. The guys are just the innocent party.

21. David Jones

Sunny, simply writing in a comment that I’m backtracking doesn’t make it true. I haven’t backtracked at all, as anyone glancing through this brief exchange will see. It makes you sound a little weird though.

You’re right, in this case she’s the reprehensible one. The guys are just the innocent party.

Except I didn’t say that at all. This is not my position – it’s just an inversion of your position which claims the woman wasn’t responsible for her actions.

“The Daily Mail has more women readers than any other paper and is the only national newspaper with more women readers than men.

The Wail is well known for employing woman who hate other woman. IE They are employed for their bitch like characteristics. They employ woman who Particularly hate woman who have careers. This plays very well with the middle class stay at home woman.

The hypocrisy is quite stunning when you read a column by some woman who attacks another woman for having a career.

Apparently the editor gets his kicks in watching woman attack other woman. You could write a thesis on the warped mind ,and inadequate nature of the male management at the Wail. Sick does not even begin to cover it.

23. David Jones

Sally,

The Wail is well known for employing woman who hate other woman.

Without necessarily agreeing with him, I think the point Jay was making was about the readership of women, not the few writers, whatever their merits.

Besides, I wouldn’t knock the Daily Mail now Sunny is using it as an authoritative source.

Sunny. I think what we have on our hands here is a Dunning-Kruger case.

I really wouldn’t bother.

Sally

I have only once ever read the Mail, so cannot pronounce authoritatively about it. But aren’t Suzanne Moore and Allison Pearson among its main women writers? I can’t see either of them as signing up to the ‘women belong in the kitchen’ brigade.

In any case, the point I was trying to make is that Dacre tries (successfully, as his sales demonstrate) to give his readers what they want. On the whole, men are rather nicer about sexually active/promiscuous women than women are. It tends to be women who want them demonized as slags. Marx argued pretty convincingly that this attitude has economic roots.
