Ed Miliband: ‘don’t out-right the right on crime’

Ed Miliband today warned his shadow cabinet colleagues not to try to “out-right the right” on crime, but follow the lead of the Ken Clarke who wants to reduce prison sentences.
The leadership contender’s remarks differ sharply from Jack Straw, the shadow justice secretary, who said that sending more people to jail had cut crime.
“I don’t think we should try to out-right the right on crime,” Miliband said. “A lot of what [Clarke] is doing is motivated by budget cuts; but he is opening up an opportunity for us to redefine part of the debate about criminal justice.”

Hoorah, finally someone seems to be getting it. Also like his turkeys comments, very accurate.
If he’s the odds on favourite, the country might not actually be doomed. Merelly in a bad position.
Just heard Alan Johnson blathering on about how the police should be able to stop and search people without any reasonable suspicion.
Then there was Burnham latest outburst about how immigrants are to blame for England not winning the world cup.
If Ed Milliband doesn’t win then Labour will surely degenerate into BNPlite.
Perhaps he’s been reading LC!
@2 – where are these remarks by Andy Burnham? Can’t find them after a cursary googling.

try here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8776005.stm
from the story:
And Burnham has said that the FA must choose between either a thriving Premier League or a strong national team.
“We are paying people from all around the world to come here and hone their skills, leaving their own domestic leagues around the world free to bring on the next generation of talent, while our own players here can’t get into starting line-ups,” he commented.
Which, I suppose, could be taken to be seen as “anti-immigration” when coupled with his other words about “British” jobs etc etc…
Thanks for that Anon. Hmmmm. Not that I expect much better from Burnham.
Your readers might be interested in Burnham Balls, a great new game for all the family.
You spin the wheel and wait until it stops on a problem. You then have twenty seconds to work out how it’s all the fault of immigrants.
Indigenous fun for everyone !
