19th February 2011
10am-5pm
Congress House
Great Russell St, London

In London Tory Mayor Boris Johnson is putting the interests of the wealthiest first, calling for lower taxes on the rich whilst driving through huge transport fare increases.

With that crowd behind him…how can he possibly lose??!!

Good grief. It’s like a mega-confederacy of dunces.

Where’s Sunny?

Reminiscent of George Orwell’s comment about the impact of a bomb under the West car park at Twickenham.

Oh dear, @4, someone hasn’t been listening to that nice Mr Obama, have they?

Play nice, now!

Admin, please see 4) for a violation of this clause of the comments policy: “Abusive, sarcastic or silly comments may be deleted.” Thanks.

Hang on – a minimum of 57 speakers to be fitted into 7 hours – I struggle to see what this will achieve other than be a gesture (of what I am not sure – there are a lot of people in that list who do not agree with each other quite fundamentally).

If I was in London I would go. It sounds like fun.
Bruce kent, Salma Yaqoob, David Lammy, Tessa Jowell and Ken Livingstone all on the same bill. It would make for an interesting fly on the wall style documentary.
Filmed and cut like the ‘Airport’ TV series.

I just love the idea of having an article with the word “progressive” in it attached to a picture of Red Ken. It would only more hysterical if it had a few of his pet sychophants in the photo with him.

Lib Con can delete my comment if they wish. It is actually quite funny to see right-wing [expletive self-censored]s coming on here and sneering at leftwing events, it proves that they have nothing better to do and that they fear the left getting organised and unified.

The public are on our side, you know. There is no mandate for this government – most people voted for an alternative* to the Tory plans. Yet the Tory plans are being implemented with little concern for democracy.

*NB: this was when the LibDems were offering an alternative, rather than choking on the Tory party’s collective [expletive self-censored but it rhymes with "sock"].

Guys put it this way: if you went to a right-wing conference you’d have to listen to Iain Dale and/or Donal Blaney and/or Nadine Dorries.

I’ll take the above lot any day :)

Good to see Bruce Kent on side and audibly committed to opposing the Tory Cuts – he is a much-respected activist – consistently faithful to his cause. This is a formidable list by any standard – but the inclusion of BK is really heart-warming – it proves that cynicism and careerism have not been all-triumphant post Thatcher. All best wishes for a successful conference.

Sunny,

You notice that there are very few right-wing conferences (not organised by nuts like Donal Blaney anyway), and strangely more meetings in pubs (which all sides can do quite well) – possibly the Guido influence?

There is a serious point here – why do the left-wing feel the need to have meetings on serious matters like this, with the usual suspects speaking (I am sure Bruce Kent is admirable, but why have him there rather than someone from the front line?). It strikes me as being very much part of a culture of authority, with the senior figures talking to everyone else (yes, they’ll be talked back at, but will they listen?).

“Right wing” conferences tend to have less loony speakers (often – shockingly – actual experts) and more focused topics. – eg
