Factcheck: Tory MP did lie about Piers Morgan

At the Murdoch hearings on Tuesday, Conservative MP Louise Mensch made a claim regarding Piers Morgan during the proceedings.

She said:

Piers Morgan – now a celebrity anchor on CNN – said openly in his book, which, clearly, was published before this controversy broke, that he had hacked phones. He said that he won scoop of the year for a story about Ulrika Jonsson and Sven-Goran Eriksson. He actually gave a tutorial in how one accesses voicemail by punching in a set default code. Clearly, from the account that he gives, he did it routinely as editor of the Daily Mirror.

Does the claim stand up? Not really.

She was invited on to CNN where she refused to make the claim again, saying repeatedly she was no longer protected by Parliamentary Privilege.

But if she was certain that Piers Morgan had said in his book that he had hacked phones, why not repeat it?

Watch

Here is the background. Louise Mensch MP took Piers Morgan’s words completely out of context.

This is the passage from his book.

Yesterday evening, Channel 4’s FactCheck blog also investigated whether her claim stood up.

They say:

So yes, Mensch is right that he gives his readers a tutorial in phone hacking, but this is quite blatantly not an open admission from Morgan that he hacked phones, routinely or at all.

Piers Morgan is big enough and ugly enough to fight his own battles. But in the absence of any confession to phone hacking in his book, FactCheck can’t let Louise Mensch skip off into the sunset with her cloak of parliamentary privilege flapping in Morgan’s face.

That looks like an abuse of Parliamentary Privilege then. Her claim that Morgan said in his book he had hacked phones was untrue.

I’m no fan of Piers Morgan but this attempt to deflect attention away from News International is pathetic.

I’m no fan of Piers Morgan but this attempt to deflect attention away from News International is pathetic.

OK Piers might be innocent, but a heck of a lot of people outside News International have been just as nefarious as they have and whatever you think of the Murdoch empire we can’t let the rest escape.

2. flyingrodent

…whatever you think of the Murdoch empire we can’t let the rest escape.

Call me appallingly naive if you will, but I suggest that Tory politicians’ and bloggers’ motivations for making these charges against that tool Morgan do not include “the even-handed pursuit of justice”.

3. Dave Cross

I doubt that anyone really believes that Piers Morgan is innocent of this. But it’s clear that he wasn’t stupid enough to admit it in his book.

Piers was also an NI journo. Do you really want to be defending hacking just because you like the Mirror?

@ 2:

And call me equally naive, but I doubt that everyone who’s currently going after Rupert Murdoch is motivated solely by outrage at the phone-hacking scandal. That sort of ad hom is weak enough at the best of times, but it’s even less convincing when it could be applied to your lot as well.

OK Piers might be innocent…

I thought everyone on LibCon had accepted two things: first that phone hacking goes back way before the Labour Government of ’97, and second that editors of newspapers that do phone-hacking always know what was going on and should be held accountable.

So, given that Morgan was editor of the News of the World 1994-1996…

7. flyingrodent

And call me equally naive, but I doubt that everyone who’s currently going after Rupert Murdoch is motivated solely by outrage at the phone-hacking scandal.

Oh, most certainly. The fact remains though that running a massive private bugging and intelligence gathering operation on UK citizens for profit, through criminal intermediaries, then insulating yourself from the consequences of those crimes by suborning police officers and interfering in ongoing police investigations, including a murder investigation…. is really quite a big deal.

I have no difficulty believing that large numbers of people who happen to strongly dislike Rupert Murdoch also have strong opinions on bribery, corruption, attempts to pervert the course of justice and so on.

On the other hand, I have extreme difficulty believing that any Tories, anywhere in the country, would give the slightest fuck about Piers Morgan if this weren’t a convenient ruse to deflect criticism of a Tory Prime Minister for being involved in all of the corruption I’m talking about.

Surely this is difficult to deny? It couldn’t be any more obvious if the entire parliamentary party were parading around Westminster in t-shirts reading Somebody Tried To Come Up With Spoiling Tactics And All They Got Us Were These Crappy Allegations And Some Humiliating YouTube Clips.

8. Luis Enrique

is there a quote in Moron’s book about Ulrika Jonsson and Sven-Goran Eriksson? where did she get that from?

9. Luis Enrique

(oh, I see the FactCheck link tells us that Moron just says he got the Ulrika and Sven strory from one of his journalists, with nothing to suggest hacking)

@ 7:

“On the other hand, I have extreme difficulty believing that any Tories, anywhere in the country, would give the slightest fuck about Piers Morgan if this weren’t a convenient ruse to deflect criticism of a Tory Prime Minister for being involved in all of the corruption I’m talking about.”

First of all, there’s a big difference between “Employing somebody who later turned out to be corrupt” and “Being involved in all of the corruption”.

Secondly, what reasons do you have for believing that “any Tories, anywhere in the country” only care about Piers Morgan because they want to deflect attention away from the Prime Minister? Why wouldn’t they care anyway? For that matter, given that the polls haven’t really changed since the scandal broke, why would they need to deflect attention away from the PM?

11. Sevillista

@tony @unseen @timj

So because there is a possibility other tabloids may have been involved in phone hacking (but no evidence and no evidence of bribing police or disrupting a police investigation), it is entirely justified to abuse Parliamentary privilege to knowingly tell libellous lies to a Select Committee?

Really?

Mensch has a valid overall point – we need to understand if other papers were involved in the same bad practices as were commonplace that News International tabloids – but there is no need for baseless bare-faced lies.

@ Luis

“is there a quote in Moron’s book about Ulrika Jonsson and Sven-Goran Eriksson? where did she get that from?”

Probably Guido:

http://order-order.com/2011/07/12/piers-morgan-knew-award-winning-scoop-was-hacked/

He’s also used the exact out-of-context quote she used, to create the same false impression; not sure what to make of that story in light of that fact. Staines isn’t someone I’d generally trust to do proper investigative journalism rather than spreading malicious gossip, but… Hopefully someone will get to the bottom of it.

13. flyingrodent

First of all, there’s a big difference between “Employing somebody who later turned out to be corrupt” and “Being involved in all of the corruption”.

Poor phrasing from me, there. Nonetheless, if Dave comes through this affair with nothing more than a reputation as “That bloke who employed somebody who later turned out to be corrupt”, he’ll be laughing. I’d have thought it would take a significantly better spin operation than the current tactic of smearing the mud around a bit.

Secondly, what reasons do you have for believing that “any Tories, anywhere in the country” only care about Piers Morgan because they want to deflect attention away from the Prime Minister?

Because the information Guido & Mensch are pimping is years old and yet has gone more or less unmentioned since then, up until the point when it became politically expedient to do mention it?

Because Louise Mensch raised it as a question with the Murdochs, knowing full well that neither of them were in a position to confirm or deny the allegation, for purposes that may or may not stem from a desire to see ultimate justice wrought on all criminals?

Most importantly, I say the Tories don’t care about it at all because even now, the Tories themselves appear not to care about it at all. I mean, maybe I’m missing all those MPs hurling themselves protectively in front of their tongue-tied colleague; maybe I’ve somehow failed to spot a grass-roots uprising of volcanic, Morgan-directed rage, but I see nothing to suggest that any Tories, anywhere, are particularly arsed about this at all.

…given that the polls haven’t really changed since the scandal broke, why would they need to deflect attention away from the PM?

Exactly. It mystifies me too. Maybe you could ask some Tories why this is, since I can’t think how any other tactic other than “Loudly cursing News Corp and vowing to root out wrongdoers” is beneficial. Still, politics, innit.

14. ukliberty

:On the other hand, I have extreme difficulty believing that any Tories, anywhere in the country, would give the slightest fuck about Piers Morgan if this weren’t a convenient ruse to deflect criticism of a Tory Prime Minister for being involved in all of the corruption I’m talking about.

Surely this is difficult to deny? It couldn’t be any more obvious if the entire parliamentary party were parading around Westminster in t-shirts reading Somebody Tried To Come Up With Spoiling Tactics And All They Got Us Were These Crappy Allegations And Some Humiliating YouTube Clips.Given that Cameron wasn’t the topic of discussion (and only referred to a couple of times in relation to the nature of their relationship) it is quite easy to deny this was a convenient ruse to deflect criticism of the PM – there was no criticism!

Mensch asked twenty-ish questions of the Murdochs (see from page 42 of the transcript, Q391) – Morgan is referred to at Q404 and Q405, as part of just one question. I don’t think this question was particularly good (and the responses were predictable) but the point she worked up to was this:

Is it not the fact—the truth of the matter—that journalists at the News of the World felt entitled to go out there and use blagging, deception and phone hacking, because that was part of the general culture of corruption in the British tabloid press, and that they didn’t kick it up the chain to you, because they felt they
were entitled to use the same methods as everybody else? Isn’t that the plain fact of the matter?

15. ukliberty

html fail! sorry…

16. flyingrodent

Yes, UK Liberty, I understand that. It’s the same point that was made during the MPs expenses scandal and about the awesome negligence and criminality during the financial crisis – Everybody was doing it, though, so… something.

If you recall, it didn’t fare much better then either although of course, then much as now, most of the guilty parties managed to wriggle out of it and continue on as before.

As a side note: it’s really very surprising that an MP on an investigative committee would intentionally provide the Murdochs with an excuse that they themselves seem to regard as insufficient. Very surprising indeed, I think.

Everybody was doing it, though, so… any investigation needs to be set wider than an examination of one newspaper in particular.

That would seem the most obvious explanation.

18. flyingrodent

That would seem the most obvious explanation.

I think we could be forgiven for considering other, less charitable interpretations.

@ 13:

“Because the information Guido & Mensch are pimping is years old and yet has gone more or less unmentioned since then, up until the point when it became politically expedient to do mention it?”

Yeah, because the motivations of an organisation with several tens (hundreds?) of thousands of members can be reliably extrapolated from what two members have done. *rolls eyes*

“Most importantly, I say the Tories don’t care about it at all because even now, the Tories themselves appear not to care about it at all. I mean, maybe I’m missing all those MPs hurling themselves protectively in front of their tongue-tied colleague; maybe I’ve somehow failed to spot a grass-roots uprising of volcanic, Morgan-directed rage, but I see nothing to suggest that any Tories, anywhere, are particularly arsed about this at all.”

So even though it’s “a convenient ruse to deflect criticism of a Tory Prime Minister”, they apparently aren’t making a huge fuss about it. Possibly they’re not only interested in their leader’s PR after all.

“Exactly. It mystifies me too.”

So even though you admit that your “Tories are just using Piers Morgan to deflect attention away from David Cameron” theory doesn’t make any sense, you’re still sticking to it. Still, I suppose abandoning it might imply that Conservatives aren’t all amoral, self-centred and cynical, and we can’t have that…

20. Derek Barnett

I no fan of Piers Morgan, in fact, I actively dislike the man but I believe he is absolutely right to demand an apology from Louise Mensch for her comments in the Murdoch hearing. He did not write what she claimed he had written and it is a disgrace that she used parlimentary privilige to lie in the way she did. PP should be used to expose the truth, not to deliberately slander someone under the cloak parlimentary protection and I hope the House of Commons deals with her very severely.
Morgan gave her ample opportunity to retract and apologise so during their exchange on the CNN report o she has absolutely no excuse in my view. Her claim that she would not be bullied was as pathetic as it was, again, untrue. She is wrong, she knows she’s wrong and she hasn’t the wit or the grace to admit it. Her party and her constituents must be very proud.

What a ridiculous individual. Her “question” was an underarm delivery so obviously soft that even Brooks looked embarrassed by it. If she’s looking for employment by Murdoch at the end what seems likely to be a brief parliamentary career she was ill advised to attack one of the digger’s few non-conservative defenders.

22. Watchman

OK, simple question. Does anyone believe that phone hacking was not known to Piers Morgan, considering he tells us how to do it? No, thought not. He may not have known of cases personally (in exactly the same way as Andy Coulson and Rebecca Brooks may not have done – they have not admitted they knew either remember) but he clearly knew of the practice. Someone he talked to told him about it apparently in 2001 (in which year is that diary entry was apparently written – it was published in 2004) which suggests it was known to those around him.

Wierdly though, despite presumably being the editor of a tabloid that would benefit from revealing this crime to the world, if it was pursued only by News International papers, he chose not to do so. At the very least, I’d like to understand that decision which was frankly against his best interests and possibly those of Trinity Mirror as a whole?

Does anyone believe that phone hacking was not known to Piers Morgan, considering he tells us how to do it?

And has since said that the practice was “widespread” in the media as a whole. And was editor of the News of the World; and of the Mirror. And whose reputation is not exactly one of scrupulous truth-dealing.

Not me, that’s for sure.

24. John Q. Publican

In context Morgan’s quote imply that he suspected someone of hacking his phone. Not impossible. Also not exclusive of his having orchestrated some, then or later.

22,23
But isn’t this thread about Mensch being untruthful, whatever else you suspect Morgan of doing he did not write, or even infer, the thing that he was accused of doing. All Mensch has done is to state that she will not repeat it outside of parliamentary privilege, doesn’t this suggest that she knows it was untruthful but won’t admit it? Can there ever be any justification to support someone who is clearly playing the system to spread lies?

26. Tim Fenton

That other papers than those run by NI were benefiting from illegally obtained information is not in dispute.

But that doesn’t justify telling whoppers about one former Screws and Mirror editor. It’s a blatant false equivalence.

The Sven’n’Ulrika-ka-ka-ka story, moreover, is well known. All you need to get a handle on it is Issue 1053 of Private Eye (not Piers Morgan’s best friend) and a more or less corroborating piece in the Guardian.

Put together, these tell you that the story as run by the Mirror was a spoiler, and that the Screws had done the hacking – why d’you think Ms Jonsson is taking action for phone hacking against them, and not the Mirror?

All of this is in my recent blogpost:

http://zelo-street.blogspot.com/2011/07/guido-fawked-spinning-wrong-tale.html

Staines is just another of the usual suspects trying to carry on painting this as a right versus left thing, and he’s gone after Morgan and the Mirror because the Mirror is a left of centre paper. That Louise Mensch appears prepared to repeat what Staines puts on his blog does not reflect well on her.

All Mensch has done is to state that she will not repeat it outside of parliamentary privilege, doesn’t this suggest that she knows it was untruthful but won’t admit it?

It suggests that she knows she couldn’t win a libel action on the basis of the allegation – i.e. that while she has well grounded suspicions that Piers Morgan was involved in phone hacking, she couldn’t prove them in a court of law. That’s not quite the same as lying.

Well, as she lied and misled parliament, perhaps she should consider whether it is time to resign her seat.

Can I go on the record as saying that using Parliamentary Privilege in order to slag off Piers Morgan during an international televised event is a wonderful and hilarious thing to do, and I whole-heartedly wish that MPs of all stripes would take their opportunity to follow suit.

30. Sevillista

@timj

Eh?

She stated that Piers Morgan admitted, in his book, to phone hacking Sven Goran Ericsson using “a little trick” he’s found.

Are you saying that this is not a lie? The quote from the book is in the article

31. Watchman

@25, 27,

It may also be that she was confused – she may not have done the research herself remember, but relied on others’ notes (and before you criticise that, that is normal practice for MPs – hence employing researchers) or even Guido’s website. Strictly speaking her accusation is wrong. I do not think it is likely to be libellous, as it would appear likely to me (especially having seen Guido’s latest post…) that Mr Morgan was aware of the phone hacking (I don’t believe you can be libellous in effectively misquoting something that is true – Johann Hari maybe, but not libellous…).

Anyway, it will be interesting to see (should it come to pass) how many of Mr Morgan’s supporters here have to undergo the same Damascene conversion I did about News International staff (I won’t say they are guilty – because they are not tried; they clearly however allowed criminal practices).

31
If you are correct, Mensch now has plenty of opportunity to apologise, but, I, for one, will not be holding my breath.

“Are you saying that this is not a lie? The quote from the book is in the article”

To be fair I doubt she set out to lie, I suspect she simply picked it up off Guido (which is disturbing in itself) and was too lazy to check it. Having been caught out she has rather bizarrely decided to try and bluster it out. I don’t think she’s the sharpest knife in the drawer.

34. Robin Levett

@Watchman #31:

I’m not sure that PM has all that many supporters here; I don’t think the City Slickers episode, for example, did him any favours on that score. I certainly wouldn’t shed any tears should his head end up in the same tumbril as Rebekah-kah-kah’s. The fact is, however, that if the Augean press as a whole needs a clearout, offering a lifeline to the representative currently on the hook isn’t the way to go about it. That and the fact that the claim is clearly dishonest – just as dishonest as the claims made around the ICO reports by Staines and Cranmer. Mensch’s repetition discloses either dishonesty or incompetence on her part; and her refusal either to repeat or withdraw on CNN tends to lead to the conculsion that the former is the case.

Seeing how Morgan has been a Murdoch bottom sniffer through all this scandal, the more interesting question for Mirror group newspapers is was Morgan a Murdoch plant destroying the Mirror from within?

36. ukliberty

She stated that Piers Morgan admitted, in his book, to phone hacking Sven Goran Ericsson using “a little trick” he’s found.

But he didn’t admit that.

Are you saying that this is not a lie? The quote from the book is in the article

Read it again – it doesn’t mention Sven Goran Ericsson.

Mensch screwed up here, either she didn’t check the facts or she was just lying. She ought to retract what she said and apologise.

Who cares! Sure. she should correct her statement but Morgan should also disclose what dirt he did in his position. It all stinks a mighty Murdoch stink.

So like I said….Who cares!

She ought to retract what she said and apologise.

Something like ‘I accused Piers Morgan of committing illegal acts while editor of the Mirror it is true and I am sorry for it. The reader may place the punctuation where he will’.

39. ukliberty

She ought to retract what she said and apologise.

Something like ‘I accused Piers Morgan of committing illegal acts while editor of the Mirror it is true and I am sorry for it. The reader may place the punctuation where he will’.

“I accused Piers Morgan of admitting that he committed illegal acts – I was wrong that he admitted it.”

As if by magic…

A FORMER reporter for the Daily Mirror who says the News of the World was not the only British newspaper involved in phone hacking says he’s likely to make himself available to testify to the judicial inquiry into the scandal.
James Hipwell, 45, told The Australian Online he saw show business reporters on the Daily Mirror regularly intercept voicemail messages when he worked there from 1998 to 2000.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/james-murdoch-has-been-accused-of-misleading-british-parliament-over-the-extent-of-the-tabloid-hacking-scandal/story-fn7x8me2-1226100025277

I’ve no idea whether Morgan was involved or not. Presumably someone is doing with the Mirror what has been successfully done with the other tabs, including he Sundy Mirror, and identifying stories which can only have been sourced this way, thus proving not only the practice but that the editor at the very least ought to have been aware (assuming he reads his own paper). It’s odd that that no-one’s identified any such story from Morgan’s Mirror. What puzzles me though is why the right seem to be obsessed with the idea of getting Morgan, is if somehow this was the antidote.

Incredible how people seem to deliberately miss the point. Piers Morgan might have hacked phones (well, commissioned people to do it) – but there’s no evidence of it and what he says in his book clearly doesn’t amount to an admission.

Lousie Mensch lied in a desperate attempt to move attention away from NI. The issue here is that she lied – not that there’s no legitimate reason to look at other newspapers to see if they were hacking too.

43. Robin Levett

@Tim J #44:

Hipwell is one of the City Slickers…

44. Watchman

Robin,

Hipwell is one of the City Slickers…

I guess that is widely known – but if we can’t accept testimony from anyone with an axe to grind or who has acted unethically or criminally, we’re going to have no witnesses to phone hacking left.

The key question is whether his account is disprovable, which is more open.

45. Robin Levett

@Watchman #44:

The key question is whether his account is disprovable, which is more open.

With respect, no; the question is whether his account stands up. At present, he hasn’t suggested that he has any evidence of wrongdoing beyond his own account. His claim stands or falls on his credibility; if it’s corroborated, fine – but while his credibility is the issue, it is extremely relevant that he has a very good reason to hold a grudge against Morgan.

As others have said, I really don’t want to be defending Morgan – but let’s see some reliable evidence please.

I find the behaviour of Mensch despicable, she used parliamentary privilege to lie. In addition her childish and prolonged twitter spats are not in keeping with someone who has been voted and is paid to represent her constituents. She is obviously out for publicity, if she will not apologise then Cameron should sack her.

47. Steve Masters

Louise Mensch’s statement in Parliament was clumsy and wrong, clearly. Sadly, this allowed Morgon to get on his high horse and paint himself as innocent, which he doubtless is not.

He was quoted telling Naomi Campbell hacking was rife, he was quoted on the radio saying it was rife, yet he never knowingly published anything that came from phone hacking.

What I would like to hear Morgan answer is, “Since you clearly knew phone hacking was rife, did you ever reject a story you suspected was the result of phone hacking?”

If he knew it went on, but was so against it, he must have turned down so many stories.
