How the abortion amendments pose a health risk to women

I pointed out yesterday the dishonesty of Nadine Dorries and her supporters saying there was a ‘profit motive’ or a financial incentive for orgs such as BPAS in offering abortions.

But the main issue here is that these proposed amendments will pose a health risk to women. That is the key reason they should be opposed vehemently.

1) Consider this. the government wants BPAS and Marie Stopes to stop offering counselling, despite the fact their counsellors are professionally trained and accredited.

So who will they be replaced with? This is not made clear at all. Which organisations have the capacity to offer counselling to up to 200,000 women a year? If BPAS and MS are banned – who will step into the vacuum? We’re not told.

2) While they aren’t being explicitly mentioned, Dorries and Frank Field would likely want organisations such as LIFE to step in instead (already, Life have replaced BPAS on a govt health advisory panel).

Do Life have the expertise? Well, let’s look at the evidence. An undercover expose of Life services recently found very worrying lapses:

At a Life centre in Covent Garden, London, the undercover researcher was given a leaflet entitled Abortions – How they’re Done, which said incorrectly that 85% of abortions are carried out using vacuum aspiration.

It stated that “the unborn child is sucked down the tube” and that “the woman should wear some protection. She has to dispose of the corpse [in the case of chemically induced abortion].”

3) How would such ‘independent’ services be regulated? Life are opposed to abortion under all circumstances including rape. How are they meant to offer ‘independent’ advice driven by good health practice?

And if Life et al are regulated by the Dept of Health and offer the same advice in the guidelines – why can’t BPAS / Marie Stopes do it? If there is evidence that BPAS and MS are not offering advice properly – why don’t Dorries or Field offer it?

4) The plans will also require women to go to two independent health advisors before an abortion. That means they’ll not only have to delay having abortion (which can be traumatic), but also end up putting more strain on an already-stretched health service. This means the quality of advice will fall and women’s health will suffer.

Let’s not focus on what motives Nadine Dorries and Frank Field. The key question here is simply whether these proposals help women and their health. And on that basis these amendments must be opposed.

The Daily Mail has published a fairly balanced experience of one woman trying to get abortion advice. BPAS and Marie Stopes don’t exactly come out smelling of roses, but here is what happens when she approaches LIFE:

My appointment with the very friendly ‘skilled listener’ Sheila left my head spinning and my body numb. I was subjected to 70 minutes of unrelenting interrogation and pressure.

For more than 20 minutes, Sheila asked a series of personal questions, ranging from where I went to university to the relationship status of my brothers and sisters.
…
She talked about the baby as ‘a proper little person’, said she ‘couldn’t remember’ what the legal abortion limit was, and explained how she couldn’t take me down the abortion route because ‘our group has total respect for life from beginning to end’.

She finished by telling me that I needed to tell my boyfriend ‘tonight’ that I was pregnant — and warning me about all the relationships that break up because of abortion.

This is the same group that replaced BPAS to advise on sexual health.

Meanwhile, Frank Field admits: “I have no evidence of that [biased advice].” Policy proposals without evidence then.

One serious concern here is that, if abortion providers are banned from giving advice, they may be unable to discuss planned procedures in such a way as to obtain the informed consent legally necessary for those procedures to go ahead.

Delaying an abortion may mean that the type of procedure required changes, increasing related medical risks and often making it more distressing. It may also lead to complications where the person seeking an abortion has underlying health problems (even where these problems would not themselves mandate termination).

In Dorries world, *nothing* mandates termination, do remember that.

I oppose her on public health grounds. While I have personal views on the matter which are quite out of step with most Liberals, I’m quite willing to accept that backstreet abortions and the unnecessary suffering and death involved are worse than the present situation.

(And I’m certainly not opposed in cases of rape, severe health complications for the mother, or severe genetic illness in the child…Tay Sachs or similar..worlds apart from Dorries blanket prohibition)

Yes, I think the problems, as outlined, with the alternative scheme outweigh the problems (which I suspect are more theoretical than actual) with the existing arrangements. If the goal is to provide the best advice for the women – it seems like a bad move. If the goal is to make abortion more difficult or more rare – I’m not sure it will work and in any case it’s a sneaky way of trying to achieve that goal.

Not sure where I stand on these proposals – if they make abortion more difficult, clearly wrong, but if they do address vested interests (they do not need to be financial) then they have a purpose…

Sunny’s logic is however not that strong.

Point 1 is indeed accurate (although I am slightly confused as to why GPs can’t advise here – this is a health issue (unless you are some sort of Christian nutter…)), but I guess if there is a need it will be supplied. As I’ve said before, as charities BPAS etc could just spin their counselling off into a separate entity and continue to provide it (even sharing fundraising still I suspect).

Point 2 is supposition – and unlikely to be the case from the government (if not the Dorries/Field) point of view, since they require there to be no interest in the outcome of counselling, and there is a clear case that Life have exactly that.

Point 3 is based on point 2 being fact. I assume however, in answer to the question of how this would be regulated, that contracts could be withdrawn in cases of malpractice (and this would almost certainly occur with Life were anyone stupid enough to give them a contract in the first place). Government decides on what is correct advice, if they are paying.

Point 4 is a serious concern – although nothing says that the counselling service cannot coexist with the provider, so this could be got round.

I think the focus on Life is counterproductive myself – it is like trying to analyse what the left-wing response to anything is by focussing on the Socialist Workers, taking the extremists to be the point of discussion. The issue is simply will this legislation do what it intends to do (deal with a perceived conflict of interest) or will it rather work to make abortion more difficult and less likely. If we could have some analysis on this, it might make forming an opinion more likely.

(Note for troll hunters – I may be right wing, but I defend the right to have abortions to the utmost extreme – including after any arbitrary limit – because I do not believe the state has any right to dictate to anyone what she (or he – I count this as a princple, not a gender issue) can do with her body. I dislike the Dorries stance immensely, and hate Life (who clearly chose their name to get that exact reaction…), but the hysteria of poorly-argued responses like Sunny’s is making forming a view very difficult here.)

This entire episode is an example of policy without evidence.

What proof is there that Marie Stopes or BPAS cannot offer unbiased counselling? Has the Government done research into the failures of their advisory service? And if LIFE are on the sexual health advisory committee, surely providing advice would be a conflict of interests?

In theory, I think the idea of independent counselling is a good one. The more information available to women, the more prepared they can be. That represents true choice. But independent counselling IS available – so Dorries et al are legislating for something which already exists. They are politicising the abortion debate – that’s very wrong.

The idea that a charity is not a charity when it has to raise funds for it’s continued existence is extremely disingenuous, and it’s making me more and more angry. My church runs on a basic business model – it’s called financial planning. It’s normal. You could argue that a charity which receives funding for helping drug addicts has a conflict of interests, because each addict who stops using means they lose money coming in. But of course, only an idiot would attempt to smear the intentions of a respected charity.

What I want to know is when Dorries is going to start arguing against the Government cuts which affect mothers. Because, you know, if there was more financial support available to women from poorer backgrounds, or to allow a teenage mother to continue with her education, then maybe women wouldn’t HAVE to choose to have an abortion. Just a thought…

Consider this. the government wants BPAS and Marie Stopes to stop offering counselling, despite the fact their counsellors are professionally trained and accredited.

Yes, they are trained and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Funnily enough LIFE’s counsellors (who YOU want to be prevented from supplying the service) are also trained and accredited by BACP, of which LIFE is a member.

BACP promotes “non-directive” counselling in which counsellors refrain from offering advice. It’s all based on Rogerian “core” claptrap. Hence all those “personal questions”.

The Dorries campaign website, meanwhile, has a video of a woman complaining she got no counselling at all – and was merely pushed through the process to abortion.

Sunny, I think you’re straw manning on points 2 and 3, at least until someone actually says they want LIFE or similar groups put in charge of these services. The rest of this article seems good, though – it’s nice to see people raising the real-world dangers of government policy instead of just shouting “this is pro-life and therefore evil”. I certainly can’t see any good reason to make a woman get sign-off from two health professionals, and it’s hard not to come to the conclusion that the hope is that this would mean there was one more person to convince her to keep the child.
