New project on climate change communication

A new site called ‘Talking Climate‘ has been launched to offer information and research on climate change communication.
They say that there is a great deal of research on climate change communication.
But too often this valuable knowledge doesn’t reach the people who need it most: climate change communicators. At the same time, researchers are often unaware of how to promote their work beyond academic journals.
At Taking Climate, the best research evidence is translated into practical guides on a wide range of topics, ensuring academics and practitioners get the most from climate change communication research.
Talking Climate is a partnership between the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN), the Public Interest Research Centre (PIRC) and Nottingham University School of Sociology and Social Policy.
The site launches with a comprehensive and regularly updated database of academic papers, a newsletter, and a blog featuring comment and analysis from climate change communication experts.

Interesting – but none of this looks like it is actually being done by actual scientists working in relevant fields (although the Nottingham academic is clearly an expert in communicating complex scientific issues), and the two charities involved look no more reliable and unbiased than the GWPF to me – they clearly have a side of the argument they are pushing.
It also intrigues me as to why people think that climate change is not being communicated well enough. I think most people know the facts and implications that this project is promoting (at a quick glance I saw nothing new anyway), and have made up their minds with this information in mind. Certainly, I can’t imagine many people in the UK do not know about climate change, but knowing about something may not mean believing the same measures are required as some people (on either side of the argument) may put forward.
This is potentially a very good move. There has been too much alarmism and FUD (fear, uncertainty & doubt) in talking about climate change over the years. When the scientists talk about temperature rise being in the range of say 1 – 5 degrees, with a probability of 2 degrees, it is often presented as a certainty of 5 degrees, or in some cases “up to 6 degrees”. Same with the comments about “you’ll never see snow again in London due to climate change”.
This extremism puts many people off, and is often demonstrably untrue. If the climate change movement wants to engage the general public, and bring them on board, more reason is required.
