A poll has found that the majority of the public oppose a proposal by the government to freeze the pay of public sector workers outside London and the South East.

28% of respondents said that the proposal, which is currently being reviewed by independent pay review boards, is ‘fair’ versus 56% who said it is ‘unfair’ and 15% who replied ‘Don’t Know’.

Opposition among women was particularly significant, with 58% of women (versus 55% of men) saying that the plan is ‘unfair’ and only 23% of women (versus 33% of men) viewing the proposal as ‘fair’.

In terms of party allegiances, of those respondents who voted for the Conservatives in 2010, 50% said that the plan is ‘fair’ while 36% said it is ‘unfair’.

Of those surveyed who said that they voted for Labour, 13% said that the proposal is ‘fair’ while 77% said it is ‘unfair’.

Of those who said that they voted for the Liberal Democrats in 2010, 24% said that the plan is ‘fair’ while 64% said it is ‘unfair’.

Epetition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/31541

The proposal for local / regional pay is blatantly unfair and will be detrimental to a huge number of individuals and communities across the UK.

The government is looking to introduce it for public sector workers but has not seen fit to apply it to MPs. This smacks of, yet again, ‘one rule for us; another for them’.

The epetition seeks to play a part in getting the government to stop pursuing this policy by drawing their attention to it in a way that they can recognise!

I hope readers will support it by signing.

Remember that a lot of the alleged difference between Private and Public sector pay is an illusion. Go into any school or hospital etc theses days. Who’s doing the cleaning, catering and other low pay jobs. Private firms. Those people’s pay doesn’t get counted when you do the sums. In private firms, these jobs are still largely in house. Similarly the Public sector employs relatively fewer lower paid people in positions such as secretarial roles. This has the effect of creating an apparent higher Public sector average wage. In fact, in particular at the higher levels, Public sector workers are unerpaid in comparison to the Private sector.

@2 – Illusion?

For *the same qualifications*, most people in the public sector are grossly underpaid.
