UKIP higher than Libdems over May

My survey of YouGov polling over the month of May has found something remarkable: UKIP have been ahead of Libdems more times than the other way around.

YouGov still lumps UKIP in the ‘other’ camp, and mentions Libdems as the third party.

But ignoring the instances they are level-pegged, UKIP was narrowly ahead of Libdems more times than vice versa.

The graph is below. A larger, interactive version with the numbers is here.

It’s a shame that Clegg didn’t read the history of the demise of the Liberal Party or if he did he chose to ignore it. And that’s what happens when you ignore history, Lloyd George had more support from the Conservatives than his own party and Clegg has gone the same way.

When you sup with the devil etc.

The normal colour for showing the far right is black, so please use this colour for showing UKIP on graphs.

Steveb,

nothing would please me more than to see the Lib Dems return to traditional liberal values, but what reaction would that get round these parts?

Hard to tell, but as I’ve suggested before, liberalism appears to be easily put aside when it suits those in power. The Liberal Party are no more because they became illiberal. I fear the same fate for the Labour Party, they lost support because, as a socialist party, they became neo-liberal.

@ 4 Steveb,

the Liberal Party abandoned liberalism at the end of the 19th century, as John Morley noted with words to the effect that they surrendered to socialism without a shot fired.

@3

The LD’s were not strictly a liberal party prior to the 2010 GE, they were an amalgam of social democrats, progressives disillusioned with the nauseating New Labour project, and the “old” pre-Alliance/SDP Liberal party.

You can argue that the rump LD’s are much closer to the classical Liberal party of old, since the SDP / social democrat / progressive half of their support has decamped more or less en masse; some to Newer Labour, some to other parties, and some into political limbo without much clue who to vote for next.

It’s pretty immaterial anyway; they are toast at the next GE, and arguments about how liberal with a small “l” they are is about as much use as two bald men fighting over a comb.
