Libdems want unpaid interns despite pledge

In April 2011, Nick Clegg said any adverts for internships with Liberal Democrat MPs would come with “real support to cover costs” in order to “give new people opportunities to participate in that kind of political activity”.

He also said the Libdems would “conform with minimum wage legislation as much as possible”. He said interns would be “properly remunerated”.

When the issue arose again last month, the Liberal Democrats said the party only recruited for those positions every four months, and that the party covered travel costs and tried to help them find accommodation.

It turns out the memo has been lost in the post.

On Wednesday this was posted to W4MP:

Voluntary position: lunch and travel expenses provided
Adrian Sanders, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Torbay, is looking for an intern for his Westminster office.
…
A commitment of three months is desirable: full and part time applications will be considered.

No mention of help with accommodation and still no “proper remuneration”.
