Daily Mail slams Cameron and Clegg on Hunt

The Daily Mail is on truly astounding form today – slamming David Cameron and Nick Clegg for their conduct over the Jeremy Hunt inquiry.

Here is what it says on Hunt:

This was the day the Prime Minister and his deputy treated the country to a display of coalition politics at its shabbiest and most pathetic. It was the day a slippery David Cameron suggested he had the watchdog’s backing for his refusal to submit the Culture Secretary to a sleaze probe.

But the Prime Minister won’t ask him, of course, because he is so entangled in the affair himself that a verdict against Mr Hunt would damage him too.

Meanwhile, it would take a brilliant psychologist to interpret Nick Clegg’s behaviour. At Leveson, he says Mr Hunt has given a ‘full, good and convincing account’ of his handling of BSkyB. Despite this, he believes his Cabinet colleague should face a sleaze inquiry.

But there’s a final twist. Who but a Lib Dem leader, on what he believes passionately is an issue of principle, would issue a thumping three-line-Whip to his MPs – ordering them to abstain? Is it any wonder that when Mr Clegg dines with important people, as we learned yesterday, he is made to sit at the children’s end?

Brutal, but fair.

Maybe for some reason The Daily Mail has actually realised that Cameron and Clegg are treating the British public for fools.

Dacre is incandescent with rage at Cameron for instigating the Leveson inquiry that has had the temerity to summon him and ask embarassing questions. Clegg is just an easy target. This may be fun to watch and another nail in the Coalition’s coffin but the Mail hasn’t changed it’s spots.
