Ecuador denies Guardian’s Assange claim

The Guardian yesterday reported that Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa, has agreed to grant political asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange asylum.

It quoted as anonymous ‘official’ within Ecuador’s government as saying: “Ecuador will grant asylum to Julian Assange.”

But the story was later updated to point out that Ecuador’s own President denied the report in a tweet.

That roughly translates to: “Assange asylum rumor is false. There is still no decision. I hope Foreign Ministry report.”

The Ecuadorian government may very well grant asylum to Assange, but the decision has not been made public yet.

Not paying your lawyers’ bills is no reason for political asylum.

Misleading headline is so misleading that even Baron Munchausen would be embarrassed by it.

3. Cath Elliott

Shouldn’t the headline read “Ecuador denies asylum decision has been made” or something Sunny. Your header is completely misleading.

Your header is completely misleading.

I think that’s the strapline for the all new Liberal Conspiracy.

5. Shatterface

For clarity’s sake, the header should say Ecuador Presedent denies anonymous report of Ecuador not denying asylum for Assange; Anonymous yet to comment.

“Espero informe de cancillería” would be better translated as “I am waiting for foreign ministry report”

Headline wasn’t meant to be ‘misleading’ – I just phrased it wrongly. Has been amended. Calm down, folks.

Battistileak.

I’m pretty sure “Espero informe de Cancillería” should translate as something like “I await the report from the Foreign Ministry”.

[8] thanks for that littleox – the film you link to may finally convince the anti-assange lobby on LC that Julian’s fears are very real indeed?

Looks like asylum HAS been granted – if the US is not interested in torturing Assange in the same way that they have been torturing Bradly Manning why don’t they just say so?

can anyone who hates this man not see the direction we are going IF the USA is allowed to take him? Do you not remember what our new anti terrorism laws say? He will be kept in an unknown location and never see the light of day again. the USA has no right because he is not even a US citizen, we should have thanked him for showing us our governments true nature and a change in policy should have been adopted from the videos of murder and documents of insanity he revealed. Why condemn this man when all he was doing was showing truth, no military plans or such were released, all this material is OLD, again not even a US citizen.
IF the USA does finally get him I’m willing to bet within a year or two he will have “committed suicide” while in custody… of course I mean murdered.

@13 IF the USA wanted him, then the UK would have happily handed him over in a heartbeat when asked – they’ve already got the man who gave Assange his info though, they don’t need him. Besides, being a rapist on the run has killed any credibility he once had, the USA likely finds the current circumstances both acceptable and amusing.

@14 cylux rapist on the run? so you know he’s guilty do you?

@15 I think he’s committed the crime of rape yes. Though due to desperately avoiding answering those charges he isn’t technically guilty just yet. I base my opinion on his first defences that amounted to “it wasn’t rape, merely a bit of playful non-consensual sex”, or “Sweden’s full of suited-up Femnazis who routinely jail all men everywhere for even looking near their chest area”. Plus there’s the fact that extraditing to the US from the UK is just as easy, if not more so, than extraditing from Sweden, and yet the USA has chosen instead to sit on its hands and do nothing, seemingly content to imprison and torture the one who made Assange’s revelations possible.

Bradley Manning is a hero, Julian Assange is a poster boy for rape culture.

[16] ‘I think he’s committed the crime of rape yes’ – an opinion based on what, the relentless partying after the first alleged offence, or the deleted tweets saying what a fabulous time she was enjoying with Assange after being sexually assaulted?

@17 The victim count been reduced to one rather than two now is it?
I’m also very sorry that rape victims don’t always behave in the ways you’d find acceptable and also have various coping mechanisms.

[19] ‘I’m also very sorry that rape victims don’t always behave in the ways you’d find acceptable and also have various coping mechanisms’ – yes, partying with the alleged rapist and eulogising him tweets is hard to understand.

You would have thought that when Assange was offered a place to stay at the second ‘pirate’ party the women concerned would have thought good riddance, rather than insisting he stay with her.

I haven’t forgotten about the second complainant – she was the one who inquired if Assange could be forced by the authorities to take an hiv test then tried to back off when the police said don’t you mean rape.

If everyone in america would turn of the propaganda machine, the tv, and instead went online and inquired about the information they seek rather then blindly accept what they are told I believe their opinion would change. This is the same as the sovereign citizens movement, and when you say sovereign citizen it means abiding by the constitution and common law rather than being part of the statutes and acts of corporate america. But you’ll see the propaganda machine striking back by labeling those nutcases in new orleans who shot and killed police officers, as part of this movement when in reality this has nothing what-so-ever to do with the what the sovereign citizens movement espouses. We are tired of this insanity in america, and we see this can not continue for much longer. Violence is NEVER the answer, violence is for those who can not communicate, violence is what our government meets us with, not what we meet them with. We can be a great nation again, we can do without being spied on and having our liberties removed for our own “safety”, stop thinking everyone is out to get you and start believing in your fellow man instead of government policies for protection. Whether you accept it or not the world views us as conquerors who go to nation after nation imposing our will without regard to their way of life, what would you do if this happened to you? We can only change the problem once we identify it, but too many people believe and follow anything their favorite news channel says not understanding they are owned by those who push these policies. Ron Paul is the best chance we have to turn this around, Gary Johnson is a close second. Don’t follow the polls, follow whats right. Basic psychology will tell you when in doubt 90% of people follow the majority, and who do you always see leading the polls? It sure isn’t Ron Paul or Gary Johnson yet everyone I’ve spoken to thinks their ideas are far better then any other politician running for president. Thank you for reading =)
