Big: Cameron is now LESS popular than his party

Lord Ashcroft dropped a mini-bombshell this morning.
His broad polling (PDF) on both political parties has found that, for the first time, David Cameron is less popular than his party.
Ed Miliband remains much less popular than his party in contrast, but while Miliband has managed to strengthen his position within the party and unite Labour, Cameron has managed only the opposite with his party.
The key point is that with Cameron now less popular than his party, it removes the top reason Cameron supporters cited to keep him in power.
The association of broad values with each party is also pretty bad for the Conservatives.
Plus, as Ashcroft points out today in a blog-post:
The Conservatives have fallen behind on “helping business to grow and recover”. The Tory advantage on “tackling abuse in the welfare system” is down to just five points. And almost unbelievably, given where we were in the last parliament, our leads on tackling crime and dealing with immigration have disappeared altogether; the Tories are now level pegging with Labour on both issues. Labour retain their 30-point lead on looking after the NHS.
Tory MPs will now start asking why they should keep Cameron given he failed to win the last election outright, looks out of touch, has managed the economy badly and cannot unite the party.
It is a good question. And with the economy very unlikely to recover soon, it is a question that will only be asked even more.

You do realise the term “Bombshell” is used to signify a staggering piece of information ‘out of the blue’, unsuspected, or surprising.
So how is this a bombshell?
Aww. I thought this had something to do with the sex scandal that was hinted at by the mail.
I should point out that I was using a mobile device and all the title I could see before clicking through was “Bombshell: Cameron is now *l…”.
Er, Cameron is 4% less popular than his party; Millipede is 28% less popular than his.
I’ve seen subatomic particles in a supercollider with less spin.
Oh, and confidence in the Tories has gone up 4% while Labour have gone down 2% despite – or because of – Labour’s further lurch to the right on benefits.
However you look at it Millipede has been an utter fucking disaster for Labour.
