BP’s boss has been diligently giving interviews in the British media over the last few days – playing down the extent of the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
But this strategy is being slammed massively in the UK, even on Fox News. This was on last night:
ThinkProgress notes this part of the transcript:
I think one thing we do know is that we can’t trust BP with information at this point. They were the ones, absolutely, you’re correct, who said, “Oh, don’t worry, the oil will not reach the beaches.” Oh, come on!

Although I hate to say it, I think I have to agree with Fox News!!!
The question you have to ask is – would they be quite this vociferous if it was a US-owned oil company on the crosshairs, say, Exxon? How heavy is the criticism of Halliburton?
It’s odd being on the same side as Fox News
“It’s odd being on the same side as Fox News”
Now if you can get the Tribune (if it is still going?), the Daily Mail and the Guardian to join in…
Although to be honest, who is going to support a big corporation who mess up and then supress information?
They have no shame.
Did you see this insulting offer? :
“At a Gulf Aid event, where locals were angry that the state of Louisiana got so little from the massively profitable oil industry in their own area, the BP man declared that the company had contributed $15 million towards encouraging tourism while pledging $500 over ten years to study the impact of the oil spill on the environment.”

As already stated above, Fox News is simply criticising BP because it is a foreign company which dared make a mistake in US territory.
Had it been a US company, Fox and its ilk would consider questioning it sedition.
Note that I don’t mean to imply BP is being unfairly criticised, just that Fox’s motivations aren’t as refreshing as we might think.
@2,6 – 100% right.
@5, you appear to have accidentally dropped the “million” that goes after “$500″ in your quote above. At least, as a keen follower of the Principle of Charity, I’m going to assume it’s accidental.
Thanks, John B. Yes, $500 million. But it might as well be 500 bucks for all the impact this sum has on BP’s profits. Less than a million a week when they clear $66 million per day.
