Yesterday, on International Women’s Day, the author Linda Grant re-tweeted lots of short anecdotes through her account. Most of them were hair-raising.

I thought it was worth highlighting some of them.

Again with the golf? That’s the second time on LC that “liking golf” has been interpreted as meaning “male”. What’s that about?

Erm, whilst there is clearly and indisputably problems with sexism in the world of employment still, I fail to see how this justifies the title of why #IWD is necessary. Would it not be more sensible to dedicate all year to dealing with this sort of stupid attitude problem?

Although intrigued as to whether asking bar staff to dress up as school girl is actually sexist – I think we need to know how male staff were dressed… (and yes, I’ve dressed up whilst working a bar – it is part of the job sometimes, so long as it is not exploitive).

Sunny – IWD would still be there even such examples of sexism stopped altogether. First, because it’s a fixture in the calendar to celebrate women, not just to highlight the struggle against sexism (there will probably be a World AIDS Day even if a cure is found, I suspect). Second, there would be those who would insist on IWD ‘in memory of’ such struggles even if they were over. Thirdly, there would be an insistence on IWD ‘just in case’ not having it would somehow herald a reversal in women’s fortunes. And lastly, the idea of feminists having a designated day to celebrate is just too good to let go of any time soon – like one of Zeno’s paradoxes – there would still be ‘a long way to go’ no matter how much progress was actually made.

Ohh boo hoo hoo!
