Welcome to the new Libcon media blog

Many of you will have noticed we already carry a fair bit of media industry coverage on Libcon. We’re hoping to expand this coverage.

Rather than report on the media industry itself, instead this blog will focus on a few areas:
(1) Tracking right-wing bias in the news. We expect this from most of the press, but what about the broadcasters who are meant to be impartial?

(2) Documenting absurd reporting from the press. The most pernicious stories, the concocted hatchet-jobs, the corrections, the forced apologies and the bullshit. There’s so much to go around.

(3) Campaigning for better regulation. The PCC needs reform. Ofcom and the BBC Trust are only slightly better. Is there any way to improve the situation?

This will primarily be a reported blog with a smattering of opinion. Contributors welcome!

ITV news has a blatant right wing bias. Not only does it adopt a tabloid “nothing works, society’s heading to hell” stance, but Tom Bradby sticks patronises Brown and Labour at every opportunity. Take a look at the ways that the party leaders’ daily activities are reported this week – Cameron’s day is reported in a formal, praiseworthy and positive manner, whereas the report about Brown day is full of snide comments, innuendo and mocking.

How’s this for starters? Today’s Daily Mail’s bilefeast against “foreign-born workers”.

It used to be “I don’t mind them coming here as long as they work”.

Now no matter what they do, it seems to be an ethnic problem. If they’re foreign, they are bad news, says the Mail.
