The official launch of the Dinosaurs Against Fair Votes Party will take place in central Birmingham today, outside the Town Hall.
Campaigning under the slogan ‘Change Is Scary’ the Dinosaur party will begin in earnest their efforts to block electoral reform next May.
Party leader D. Functasaurus explained,
Some people will tell you that our current electoral system is outdated and not fit for purpose. They will explain how it forces people to vote tactically rather than for what they believe in, and how it allows MPs to get elected with the support of much less than half of the voters in their constituency. They will tell you that in May, the UK should vote to adopt a different electoral system called the Alternative Vote, which would fix both these problems.
But we don’t like change. Our current system may distort people’s wishes, and produce governments that do not accurately represent the country. It may force people to second-guess how others will vote before they do, rather than just voting for who they think is the best candidate.
But we’ve had this system for years! New-fangled ‘Alternative Vote’ systems may be used to elect the leaders of major political parties, in the general elections for nations like Australia, and most trade union elections. The Academy Awards may use such a system for deciding Best Picture, recognising it as fairer. But these people are mistaken if they think fairness justifies change.
The party’s website www.changeisscary.co.uk goes live today.
Party members will listen to a stump speech by the party leader D. Functasaurus, and then head out on the streets of Birmingham, to convince the people to resist change and vote ‘NO’ in the AV referendum.
