Counter-terrorist office – grass up anarchists!

A weekly briefing by the City of Westminster’s ‘Counter Terrorist [sic] Focus Desk’ (see here – PDF file) calls for all anarchist activities and events to be reported to the police.

Next to an anarchist symbol, the briefing states:

Anarchism is a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful, and instead promotes a stateless society, or anarchy. Any information relating to anarchists should be reported to your local Police.

Sorry, did anyone mention a crime? Apparently that’s not a necessary prerequisite.

If you consider the state harmful then you should be reported to the police.

I suggest the Met should start off with all the libertarians that inhabit the Tory party – they are far more dangerous.

Also on the same page, but further down…

Your local anarchists should take higher priority than al-Qaeda operatives‘!

The police briefing was issued as part of the Met’s CommunitySafe initiative.

WOW, shit hadn’t noticed that, thanks Sunny Hundal

Well, for those who believe that the police are first and foremost the enforcers of the state, rather than upholders of the law, this will be excellent confirmation of their biases.

3. Charles Wheeler

Could rope in the Randian libertarians in too.

so power junkies want to target people who want nobody having power over us, why is that not surprising?
It reminds me of the plot of a book I read a few years ago, where various secret police infiltrate an anarchist cell (it turned out all exept one were secret police from various agencies) and it was those police spies that caused ALL the mayhem….
…the book was amusing, a work of fiction, yet it is amazing (& worrying) that power junkies want to waste our money & time with this kind of paranoid drivel!

5. oldpolitics

‘Your local anarchists should take higher priority than al-Qaeda operatives‘!

They probably read that report everyone was retweeting the other day that said anarchist and far-left groups were 15 times more likely to be responsible for terrorist acts than Muslims…

@5, have you read Seamus Milne’s The Enemy Within?
That is non fiction, and describes how the “milk snatcher” decided to smash the miners – what was their crime? they had to go on strike, have zero income while on strike, all to defend their jobs – because there was nothing else for them at the time (& precious little now except poverty line wage slavery)
For ideological reasons, they were smeared, demonised and criminalised by the police & secret police. Since the miner’s strike the truth has slowly come to light – for those prepared to read beyondthe political correctness you get from associated news & news international (i interpret that phrase as groupthink)
incidentally, no criminal proceedings were ever successfuly made against the anarcho- syndicalist Scargill

7. oldpolitics

@6 sure – I’m just curious about the apparent desire to have it both ways. According to “the facts” which everyone was very keen on a mere week ago, far-left and anarchist groups are objectively a far bigger danger than Islamist groups.

strange that, recently it has been extreme rightwingers causing murder & mayhem – .& justifying it with paranoid, puerile ranting based upon previous rants blah blah, whether it is the state ie the Confederation of Imperial America efectively manufacturing a million Bin Ladens in the middle east, plus more than a few mass graves no doubt, or that monster in Norway killing children. What is the left wing equivalent? swinging from a flag on the Centopath???

@oldpolitics

People were also making that point about people with right wing views, people who were Christians and so on (and these seemed far more prominent than any comparisons to anarchists – it wasn’t an anarchist who recently committed a terrorist attack, after all). So if that’s really the logic, why aren’t they listed by the police too?

Plus it’s a spectacular case of Missing The Point. The point wasn’t that everyone should be clamped down on by the police, rather, that we shouldn’t be making generalisations on anyone based simply on sharing beliefs, whether it’s belief in God, right wing views, or anarchism.

It’s a typical dumb authoritarian response: “Muslims are all responsible for terrorism”, “But this terrorist was someone who ate vegetables, should we clamp down on that too?” “You’re right, we’re going to clamp down on Muslims and people who eat vegetables!”

10. Mary Tracy

I have a good mind of calling the police and reporting Noam Chomsky.

Can we say that we are now living in a fasc*st state? Yes? No?

@ 9, people who are not pathological see it as a joke, unfortunately people in power seem to be! ( it is not a joke when people die though!)
@10 if it looks like a skunk, acts like a skunk & SMELLS like a skunk, it is….

12. Mr S. Pill

This is an utterly insane proposition. Anyone know who to complain to? You can’t criminalise a philosophy for fuck’s sake.

@12, course you can if you are high on power & privilidge, and hate the opinions of others…

@12, and even if your not, if u are a scitzophreic patsy of power & privilidge, you can!!!

There are philosophies that have a tendency to produce terrorist behavior – because of the philosophy itself. Seems natural to me that the police would take an interest in groups were it is likely that this is the case. That would include islamists, anarchists, environmentalists, far right/left groups – any group that has a track record and continued probability of furthering their objectives through terrorism.

It is implied by this position that there has to be an element of intelligence gathering on groups some of which have only, and will only, engage in lawful behavior.

It baffles me that you can express any degree of surprise over this Sunny, when you greeted with delight and cheered on the Telegraph witch-hunt and smear campaign targeting an anarchist organiser. I’m glad, however, you appear to have implicitly conceded that you were wrong in doing so.

I’m glad, however, you appear to have implicitly conceded that you were wrong in doing so.

James – actually, no, don’t get too excited. I don’t think the police should criminalise any philosophy or ask citizens to lock up people who haven’t committed any crimes.

Your mate wasn’t in that category though was he? This is what your mate posted online

If the TUC/Labour Party say a single fucking word about violence tomorrow without mentioning the police, then they have revealed themselves

And he called himself part of the violent minority – isn’t that right? Trying to compare that to what the police is calling for above is laughably idiotic.

18. Leon Wolfson

Hello, I’m a Proudhonist, technically an anarchist even though I don’t consider myself such. Please feel free to report me to the Met, as I believe in radical things like opening up the retail banking sector to significantly more providers, and raising tax rates on non-labour income.

Okay, I think it’s time to stop talking to the police in London. Period.

@18 – how do you marry tax coercion with anarchy?

Much of the younger right-wing are essentially Anarchists – you will find some arguing variously for the dismantling of the military, abolition of standing income tax and sales taxes, transfer of all educational policy and schools to local democratic control – including funding etc.

The other problem is that most people spraying anarchy symbols on public buildings during various demos are really SWP agitators wanting to usher in social breakdown as a precursor for revolution – not exactly a rejection of the legitimacy of the state as a philosophy.

20. Leon Wolfson

@19 – As I said, I don’t consider myself one, it’s a label others apply to Mutualists. By any measure, it’s a strongly left, not right, wing philosophy.

Also, mutualism has no issue with fair taxation, and believes not in revolution but in gradualism, growing worker cooperatives, opening up retail banking to many providers, encouraging local currencies and supporting issues like corporate tax breaks for worker-ownership and higher taxes on non-labour income.

It has a LOT in common with, although is not identical to, the Cooperative party. I am, quite deliberately, poking the met on this issue.

(The Nordic Model is has significant similarities to the society wanted by Proudhon, in that the state helps each individual stand on their own, and association between people is their choice rather than being forced)

I’m glad, however, you appear to have implicitly conceded that you were wrong in doing so.

Actually I want to add to this.

First, he was targeted for breaking windows and vandalism in Oxford St, as far as I recall. If you can’t tell the difference between a person who breaks windows (if that’s what he was found guilty of) and someone who just expresses belief in anarchy – then you’re crackers.

Second, your mate spent half his day fantasising about putting a boot on my face or throwing pies at me or whatever else. The idea that I should express solidarity with such an immature, idiotic fool is actually downright hilarious. If you’re actually being serious – I’m not surprised you’re the target of such ridicule by even people who you think are your mates.

Given the appalling graphic design of that so-called newsletter, I hoped that this was some stupid hoax!

Wow. I should get my Aspie son to read up on anarchist theory & then go down the local cop-shop & regale them for hours with the history of Anarchism. That’s information regarding anarchists, right? He can prattle on for hours & hours about Emma Goldman or Kropotkin or whatever, could take them days to listen to it all.

24. Terry Stewart

“First, he was targeted for breaking windows and vandalism in Oxford St, as far as I recall. If you can’t tell the difference between a person who breaks windows (if that’s what he was found guilty of) and someone who just expresses belief in anarchy – then you’re crackers.”

Can’t exactly remember the case, but I’m pretty sure that guy wasn’t actually accused of anything. I remember being disheartened at the time, because the whole campaign against him seemed to be based on the fact a website was registered to him. And that website was Solidarity Federation, which anyone actually involved in activist circles in London will know do really bloody excellent, feet-on-the-ground workplace activism (holding Office Angels to task being one) and are common sights on the picket lines. So I think he probably is due a bit of solidarity in the face of this news. Obviously if the chap involved was charged or convicted Sunny I’d be happy to retract that.

As it is (and as a trades unionist who’s seen an unpleasant amount of police intimidation and violence recently) I’d echo that sentiment about Labour not condemning police violence strongly enough. As it is I’d much rather trust one of those Solfed anarchists (ideological differences aside) than some of the Labour MPs supposedly representing working class people in Parliament. You know where you stand with them, and they understand solidarity, but maybe I’m just a jaded old activist.

25. muslim anarchist

so your local anarchist should be priority over al qaeda fanatics.
what about if you have an al qaeda supporting muslim anarchist, oh crap don’t tell anyone i was here, lol

So, basically, the Met want people to report political dissidents to them, at least when those dissidents are anarchists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissident
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_dissent

I’m not an anarchist myself, but I consider this to be a direct attack on my rights as a citizen of a supposedly free democracy.

I grew up in the latter years of the Cold War, and still remember how proud and grateful we were supposed to be to live in a free country. Now it seems as if the political establishment and the officers and agents of the State want us to lose the Cold War two decades after it ended.

The State itself can have no democratic legitimacy, and therefore no legitimacy at all, if we, the people, are not free to dissent from even having a State. This is simply because the State must have the freely given consent of the people in order to be democratically legitimate itself, and consent cannot be freely given if it can’t be freely withheld. Therefore, this call, by the Met, to report anarchists, undermines the legitimacy of the State they’re seeking to defend.

If I file a complaint, would I be putting myself on their radar, inviting suspicion and possible surveillance? Would I at least get put on a secretive database of “domestic extremists”? Or am I already achieving that with just this comment?

There should be sackings in the Met for this utter disgrace.

27. dave bones

cheers for posting this.

Its hilarious.

When I was filming mad muslims a log while back I went to a big ‘were not terr-ist” march organised by what they call “moderate” muslims and the FIT squad all turned on me and ended up with the “you’re not thinkin of joinin this lot are you?” which I saw written on their face the whole conversation.

I said “I don’t believe there is a go..”

“Thank you for your time” they said.

was surreal taking about the existence of God with people as thick as the FIT squad. I was sort of angry for a bit but it was dead funny.

When they killed Ian Tomlinson and the Blackheath climate camp was so mellow I thought they were going to learn something but its a bit too much to hope for. You got to love them.

Have you seen this vid of Muslims having a decent conversation with someone from EDL and it only turning ugly when the cops get involved. This should be a number one training video for the TSG.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDVRQVK2hI8

I find the conversation quite touching- really. It almost makes me want to pick up a camera again. for what good it would ever do!

hahahahaha

The police copied their brief description of anarchism from Wikipedia!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism

“Anarchism is a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful, and instead promotes a stateless society, or anarchy. Anarchists seek to diminish or abolish authority in the conduct of human relations. Anarchists widely disagree on what additional criteria are essential to anarchism. According to The Oxford Companion to Philosophy, “there is no single defining position that all anarchists hold, and those considered anarchists at best share a certain family resemblance.” …”

It just occurred to me that this might be significant. Is it reasonable to expect whoever copied the start of it to have read enough of it to know what it’s really about? Is this further evidence that this is deliberately political policing by the Met?

Interestingly, in the introductory paragraphs, the article says, “Most anarchists oppose all forms of aggression, supporting self-defense or non-violence (anarcho-pacifism)”.

This blatantly political activity by the police should be regarded as being at least as big a scandal as all the phone hacking stuff.

I have no problem with anarchists – just wished they practiced what they preached. How many are on benefits ?

30. buddyhell

@19
You said
“Much of the younger right-wing are essentially Anarchists – you will find some arguing variously for the dismantling of the military, abolition of standing income tax and sales taxes, transfer of all educational policy and schools to local democratic control – including funding etc”

No, there is a big difference between r/w libertarians and Randroids on one hand and anarchists and libertarian socialists on the other. The right still cling to capital, while the left wants to abolish it. Indeed, the right sees laissez faire capitalism as a means to greater liberty, while the left sees it as an obstacle.

31. Waterloo Sunset

I have no problem with anarchists – just wished they practiced what they preached. How many are on benefits ?

About the same percentage as non-anarchists, at least in my experience.

But some of them use money! Despite claiming to be anti capitalist. How outrageous! Anybody would think that anarchism was a political ideology that aimed to change society, as opposed to a lifestyle choice.

32. Hildegard

Oh dear, oh dearie me. Really, have we learned nothing? Or is there some element of high-level security vetting that selects positively for nincompoopery? There’s some very entertaining stuff released under the 30-year rule on the over-excited allocation of State resources to monitoring & infiltrating of Plaid Cymru back in the day. Plus ca change, eh?

As to anarchism, recall seeing Michael Moorcock on a tv show many moons ago; he was being harangued by some foam-flecked Tory or other, who used the word “anarchist” as a term of abuse. Moorcock let him go for a while & then replied to the effect; “Yes, I am an anarchist. The difference between you & me is that when you see a red light, you stop only because you are afraid of punishment. I am an anarchist, I stop because I know it is the right thing to do.”

Many people I meet who describe themselves as “anarchist” are at best libertarians, more often, they’re just very cross with their mum. Moorcock’s idea of anarchy seems preferable.

33. Shatterface

To be honest, its nice to get a bit of attention.

34. Rory MacKinnon

Hey Sunny, I don’t see that “higher priority” comment anywhere in the pdf you linked. Where did you see it?

35. Shatterface

Anarchism gave us War and Peace, Jerry Cornelius and the Bash Street Kids.

36. Leon Wolfson

@29 – Oh I do. Of course, being a nice left-wing mutualist, I don’t have any problem with money, and believe that recompense for working should be the primary source of money in society, not unearned income!

But let’s not get media stereotypes in the way, eh?

37. The Judge

@OP:

“Sorry, did anyone mention a crime? Apparently that’s not a necessary prerequisite.”

Plod Plodnikov of the Right-Thinking-People’s Police is only interested in thought-crime nowadays, tovarishch.

@32:

“Many people I meet who describe themselves as “anarchist” are at best libertarians, more often, they’re just very cross with their mum.”

Applause!

And they’re usually cross because their mum has confiscated the copy of “Atlas Shrugged” over which they’ve been wanking since they were thirteen. 🙂

38. Chaise Guevara

Next up, liberals!

In all seriousness, I’m betting this is the work of a few people rather than an official government plan to start labelling political undesirables.

39. Malcolm Redfellow

“I’m Spartacus!”

“No! I’m Spartacus”

etc.etc.

40. Leon Wolfson

@38 – A few years ago? I might have agreed. Now, I’m going to wait and see how this plays out before I’m willing to say it’s not an imposed political policy…

“Smash the state? Us? Heh, that’s just what we talk about in the pub after too many beers, we didn’t think you’d take us seriously, officer!”

Can we say that we are now living in a fasc*st state? Yes? No?

As they are not making any more episodes of The Young Ones, I guess this thread will have to do.

43. gruffbilly

BE PURE. BE VIGILANT. BEHAVE.

44. gruffbilly

…lets not forget Tiswaz. I for one was always kicking back against those conformist Shop Swop squares.

My Tipp-Ex ‘ed pencil case would have created a crime scene this day’n’age 🙂

45. Chaise Guevara

@ 10 Mary

“Can we say that we are now living in a fasc*st state? Yes? No?”

No. One swallow does not a summer make. Also we have free speech and elections and stuff.

Why the asterisk, btw?

You mean to tell me that the Cossacks *really* work for the Czar?!

47. Phill Evans

Well, any publicity is good publicity and it’s always nice to be recognised (although perhaps not to be vilified and spat upon in the street…)

I am proud to call myself an anarchist. It took me a long time to work out that that was what I was. I live well away from the law abiding people of London but perhapss I will approach a Shropshire bobby and ask him if he (or she, as it may be) is looking for anarchists….
